Storia dell'antico Egitto

Sino al VII, VI millenio a.C. un clima umido e caldo con una lussureggiante vegetazione subtropicale, caratterizzava l’Egitto. Le zone ricoperte da boschi e le colline (ora desertificate) erano terreno di caccia.

Ci vollero millenni prima che il Nilo, originariamente a clima torrentizio, scavasse il suo letto portando benefici al suolo egizio.

Le vallate a lungo furono completamente inospitali costellate di lagune e malsane paludi.
Poche sono le testimonianze dell’età paleolitica.
Reperti più abbondanti relativi alla fase mesolitica, si trovano a Helwan, Kom Ombo e nell’oasi di Laqeita, periodo che corrisponde anche ad un cambiamento di clima divenuto più asciutto.

L’altopiano del Sahara, ormai inabitabile tranne che per poche oasi, spinse le popolazioni verso la valle del Nilo che lentamente aveva assunto l’aspetto attuale.
Ritrovamenti nelle zone di Merimda, Beni Salama e nella zona del Faiyum, mostrano che l’economia durante l’età neolitica, era basata sull’allevamento e sull’agricoltura e le tombe avevano un’abbondante corredo funebre, amuleti e oggetti ornamentali.

Allo stesso periodo risalgono ceramiche lavorate, lance, asce levigate e frecce.

Solitamente si usa dividere il neolotico egiziano in tre grandi fasi:

  • La civiltà di Badari che, basata sull’economia agricola e pastorale, era caratterizzata dalla presenza di utensili di pietra, d’osso, di conchiglia, di rame e da  ceramiche.  Le necropoli in cui sono state ritrovate statuine femminili, vasi e tavolozze sorgevano lontano dai villaggi.
    • Il periodo di Naqada I in cui sono evidenziate non soltanto influenze nubiane, ma anche asiatiche. Alcune raffigurazioni di canidi testimonierebbero il culto di Seth, appaiono i primi sarcofagi e come nell’epoca faraonica, nell’Alto Egitto i morti sono sepolti con la testa a oriente.
    • Il periodo di Naqada II dove è sempre più frequente l’uso del rame a cui si aggiunge l’argento. Dagli elementi iconografici di origine mesopotamica su oggetti egizi si potrebbe supporre delle invasioni nella valle del Nilo da parte popolazioni asiatiche.
