La scena di uno dei più raccapriccianti misteri criminali di tutti i tempi ha un nome preciso Ciudad Juárez, nello stato di Chihuahua, alla frontiera con gli Stati Uniti.

La sua popolazione, 1.300.000 abitanti, è ostaggio di assassini senza volto.

Quanto avviene qui è un insulto ai diritti umani.

Dal 1993 al febbraio 2005 quasi 400 donne sono state rapite, violentate e assassinate, altre 600 sono scomparse.

In maggioranza avevano caratteristiche comuni: almeno un centinaio erano di umili origini, quasi sempre operaie, tutte di struttura minuta, brune e con i capelli lunghi.

Tutte sono state vittime di violenze sessuali e strangolate. Moltissime rimangono ancora senza nome.

Alcuni cadaveri sono stati ritrovati nei quartieri del centro cittadino, altri scoperti in zone incolte della periferia. Una cosa è certa: tutte le donne sono state uccise da qualche altra parte, a volte dopo esser state sequestrate per intere settimane…

Il modus operandi degli assassini è identico a quello dei serial killer.

Gli omicidi si ripetono, si assomigliano, le sevizie sono le stesse e riguardano non solo donne adulte ma anche adolescenti, e addirittura bambine di 10 o 12 anni.

Per tutte le donne, Ciudad Juárez è diventato il luogo più pericoloso del mondo.

Da nessuna parte, neppure negli Stati uniti dove pure i serial killer non mancano, le donne sono così gravemente minacciate. Nel resto del Messico, su dieci vittime di assassini una sola è donna. A Ciudad Juárez, su dieci persone assassinate quattro sono donne.

E la serie dei delitti non s’interromperà di certo visto che, secondo le Nazioni unite, il tasso di impunità in Messico è quasi del 100%.

Per combattere un simile flagello non esiste altra arma se non la memoria, la testimonianza.

“Non mi sono mai sentito così sconvolto come quando mi sono recato sui luoghi in cui sono stati scoperti i cadaveri: era come entrare in una quarta dimensione, con un sentimento di terrore sospeso tra realtà e allucinazione.”

Gli interrogativi si susseguono all’infinito, senza che nessuna inchiesta seria sia in grado di fornire risposte.

Diverse testimonianze indicano che gli assassini sarebbero stati protetti, in un primo tempo, dai poliziotti di Chihuahua. Successivamente avrebbero beneficiato di appoggi negli ambienti del potere legati al traffico di droga.
