Nostradamus

Nostradamus nacque in Francia a Saint-Remy-de-Provence il 14 dicembre 1503. Il nonno Pietro de Notre-Dame, medico e astrologo, discendeva dalla tribù ebrea di Issacar.

Questa tribù, si dice, che si impossessò dei documenti rinvenuti nelle camere di iniziazione egizie, di tutte le formule geometriche, cosmologiche e algebriche usate in seguito nella Torah e nella costruzione del tempio di Salomone.

A sedici anni Michel già conosceva la lingua latina, greca ed ebraica.

Inoltre aveva una buona dimestichezza con i principi di astronomia e le pratiche mediche. A diciassette anni concluse gli studi presso l’Università di Avignone ed in seguito studiò alla prestigiosa Università di Montpellier.

A trent’anni era già un illustre medico e fu chiamato a Bordeaux, Agen ed Aix-en-Provence dove curò i malati colpiti dalla peste nera.

Spinto dalla voglia di conoscere altri studiosi Nostradamus intraprese diversi viaggi per tutta l’Europa durante i quali ebbe occasione di incontrare e conoscere Paracelso e Agrippa.

Nel 1546 fu richiamato in Provenza dove si era nuovamente abbattuto il flagello della peste. 

Stanco delle incomprensioni familiari e private, ma anche della vita avventurosa che aveva sin li condotto, l’anno dopo decise di concentrarsi sugli studi astronomici. Si ritirò così nel suo piccolo osservatorio di Salon-de-Provence.

Nostradamus fu uomo di scienza, medico e astrologo, mirabile filosofo e poeta, nonchè attento osservatore della politica, tanto da essere guardato con sospetto dai detentori del potere.

Le sua opere più conosciute sono le “Centurie astrologiche”, libri profetici che, scritti in quartine poetiche, contengono premonizioni ottenute attraverso la pratica astrologica ma anche mediante procedimenti magici.

L’opera abbraccia un arco temporale che si estende fino alla fine dei tempi, che sarebbe collocata intorno all’anno 3797.

Queste profezie rimangono misteriose soprattutto per i numerosi equivoci e ambiguità che le diverse interpretazioni possono suscitare.

Nostradamus morì a Salon il 2 luglio 1566 a 62 anni. La popolazione, che lo venerava come un santo, dopo la sua morte fece della sua tomba un luogo di pellegrinaggio. Si ritiene che il suo feretro sia stato profanato durante la Rivoluzione francese e che egli tenesse in mano una tavoletta con scritto la data della violazione della sua tomba e alcuni anatemi rivolti al violatore.

L’uomo sarebbe morto il giorno dopo il suo crimine così com’era scritto sulla tavoletta.
