Josif Vissarijonovic Dzugasvilij, detto Stalin (acciaio), nasce a Gori in Georgia il 21 dicembre 1879, da una famiglia di poveri contadini servi.

Cresce nella peggiore indigenza con un padre alcolizzato che picchia moglie e figlio, fino al momento in cui, abbandonando la famiglia, va a lavorare in una fabbrica a Tiflis e qui rimane ucciso durante una lite.

Josif, rimasto così orfano a 11 anni, si ammalò prima di vaiolo, poi prese un’infezione del sangue che mal curata, gli lasciò il braccio sinistro offeso.Nonostante questo continuò gli studi distinguendosi dagli altri alunni per intelligenza  volontà, memoria e incredibilmente anche in prestanza fisica.

Il direttore della scuola suggerì alla madre di farlo entrare al seminario teologico di Tiflis, che il ragazzo frequentò fino al maggio del 1899, quando ne fu espulso.

Il futuro capo di un immenso Paese che farà chiudere tutte le chiese, non aveva di certo la vocazione per farsi prete, infatti mentre frequentava il seminario partecipava alle riunioni clandestine dei lavoratori della ferrovia di Tiflis, una città che stava diventando il centro del fermento nazionale di tutta la Georgia.

Da semplice partecipante, divenne prima militante e poi con il nome di battaglia “il Koba” un evidente agitatore in cui il “credo” evangelico” era stato sostituito dal”credo di Marx e di “Engels” e il cui unico interesse era la politica attiva portata all’estremo.

A vent’anni Stalin sempre più infervorito dall’ideologia marxista, che lui vede a suo modo, lo porta ad essere cacciato anche dall’organizzazione per aver calunniato i capi più anziani di lui.

Costretto ad abbandonare Tiflis, si trasferisce a Batum, dove ricomincia la sua attività di agitatore, ma questa volta a capo di un gruppo di autonomi.

Dopo una manifestazione di scioperanti degenerata in rivolta, Stalin, accusato di averla organizzata, finisce in prigione per un anno e poi deportato ed esiliato in Siberia. In cella conosce un famoso agitatore marxista Uratadze e inizia a leggere l’Inskra (la Scintilla) il famoso giornale clandestino con gli articoli di Lenin.

Inspiegabilmente Stalin ricompare libero all’inizio del 1904 in Transcaucasia, nel giro di poche settimane fa già parte della fazione bolscevica che fa capo a Lenin. Dopo alcuni mesi partecipa come delegato alla conferenza nazionale del partito Bolscevico, in Finlandia, Qui avviene l’incontro con Lenin, che cambierà totalmente la sua vita e il futuro della Russia.

Stalin capì subito quanto fosse importante l’indottrinamento della popolazione e la propaganda più sfrenata sui mezzi di comunicazione ovviamente gestiti dalla stato. Gli intellettuali cominciarono a diventare veri e propri impiegati dello stato. Scrittori ed intellettuali di ogni tipo dovevano essere “ingegneri dell’animo umano” con l’unico scopo di costruire dal versante culturale il socialismo.

Il cinema, il teatro e la musica diventano mezzi di lotta “contro l’ideologia borghese” ed il pericolo di una sua eventuale rinascita.

Chi si ribellava veniva considerato nemico, le sue opere proibite e, nel migliore dei casi, espulso dall’Unione Sovietica.

Grazie ad una crescita economica impetuosa e ad una sempre più imponente industrializzazione, per alcune persone la vita cominciava a diventare davvero migliore. Questo bastava a renderli fedeli a Stalin, ignorando che tutto ciò era dovuto allo sfruttamento di milioni di lavoratori ed ignorando i drammi della collettivizzazione.

Negli anni 1937-1938 migliaia di persone, anche fedeli al regime, furono imprigionate o fucilate. Stalin ben presto cominciò ad aumentare i suoi sospetti e la sua diffidenza e l’ossessione di un complotto cominciò ad esasperare sempre più le menti dei capi sovietici.

Per essere accusati bastava avere un passato scomodo, aver fatto parte di gruppi di opposizione, aver espresso dubbi su Stalin o essere stati condannati in passato anche per pene lievi.

Nel luglio 1937 Mosca inviò una direttiva in cui metteva in guardia tutte le sezioni locali del partito contro presunti sabotatori. Scattò poi la terribile operazione 00447 che consisteva nell’inviare in ogni provincia e distretto un numero di quote di persone che dovevano essere arrestate o fucilate.

Ai dirigenti locali il compito di dare un volto a quei numeri. La quota doveva essere raggiunta in ogni caso.

Fu così che solerti dirigenti per raggiungere i numeri stabiliti finirono con l’arrestare numerosi innocenti. Contemporaneamente veniva instillato nella popolazione il teorema del complotto, la gente doveva credere che chi era preso era davvero colpevole e giustamente punito.

Nel partito ci fu un violento ricambio generazionale. I vecchi funzionari sostituiti da giovani elementi che grazie a Stalin potevano fare carriera e perciò gli furono sempre fedeli.

Dopo ventinove anni di dittatura, terrore, deportazioni e repressioni Stalin morì all’età di settantatre anni.

La morte del leader causata da insufficienza circolatoria e polmonare, avvenne solo quattro giorni dopo aver subito un’emorragia cerebrale nella residenza del Cremlino. La notizia della morte di Stalin fu nascosta dagli organi ufficiali del Soviet Supremo per più di quattro ore.
