La maschera funeraria di Tutankhamon fu realizzata con numerosi strati d’oro battuto, intarsiato di ceramica e pietre semipreziose. Riproduce fedelmente i lineamenti del giovane re al momento della morte.
Il faraone porta il tradizionale nemes, il copricapo a strisce blu e dorate, simbolo del dio solare Ra.
Gli elementi caratteristici sono il naso sottile e leggermente storto, le narici delicate e le labbra carnose. Secondo l’antica tradizione, intorno agli occhi e fino alle tempie, vi sono tocchi di lapislazzuli. I lobi delle orecchiate sono forati e al ritrovamento erano coperti con nastri d’oro.
Anche gli occhi hanno un loro simbolo: quello sinistro rappresenta la Luna, mentre quello destro il Sole.
Scintillano sulla fronte del re, le due divinità associate al potere reale, l’avvoltoio del Sud e l’ureo del Nord. Il becco dell’avvoltoio è di lapislazzuli e gli occhi sono di quarzo dipinto in bianco e nero, mentre l’ureo è intarsiato di cornalina, lapislazzuli e turchese.
Le spalle di Tutankhamon sono coperte da un ampio collare, anch’esso di lapislazzuli, quarzo, feldspato verde, che termina con due teste di falco intarsiate sulle spalle.
Sulla parte posteriore si trova un’iscrizione geroglifica che riporta il testo capitolo 531 dei “Testi dei Sarcofagi” del Medio Regno e che nel Nuovo Regno venne incorporato nel Libro dei Morti.
