Le catacombe, in origine, erano luoghi di sepoltura dove i cristiani si radunavano per celebrare i riti funebri, gli anniversari dei martiri e dei defunti.
Esistevano cimiteri all’aperto, ma i cristiani, per diversi motivi, preferivano i cimiteri sotterranei, rifiutando l’usanza pagana della cremazione dei corpi.
Sull’esempio della sepoltura di Cristo preferivano l’inumazione per un senso di rispetto verso il corpo destinato un giorno alla risurrezione dei morti.
Diventarono in seguito dei veri e propri centri di pellegrinaggio. Le catacombe non furono usate come nascondigli segreti dei cristiani. Questa è una leggenda, una finzione proposta da romanzi e film.
Terminate le persecuzioni, soprattutto al tempo di papa San Damaso I (366 – 384), le catacombe divennero veri e propri santuari dei martiri, centri di devozione e di pellegrinaggio dei cristiani da ogni parte dell’impero romano
