Nei primi secoli della cristianità le autorità ecclesiastiche nei casi di eresia, si limitavano, ad applicare pene di carattere spirituale, la più grave delle quali era la scomunica.
Ritenendo insufficienti i mezzi ordinari e i vescovi per combattere l’eresia, la Chiesa nominò propri delegati con l’incarico di ricercare e giudicare gli eretici.
I tribunali si diffusero in tutta l’Europa, affidati in un primo tempo ai domenicani e successivamente anche ai frati minori.
Si trattava di una istituzione ecclesiastica destinata a cercare e a punire le varie forme ereticali che minacciano la stabilità della Chiesa
Forme come il valdesimo, il catarismo, il protestantesimo, il giudaismo, in breve tutto ciò che non si conformava alla dottrina cattolica.
Tra le due funzioni che caratterizzarono l’Inquisizione, tuttavia, non è tanto quella investigativa che assunse rilievo, quanto quella repressiva,( con roghi, impiccagioni, sevizie, torture) e che renderà tristemente famosa questa istituzione attraverso i secoli.
