Artemide e Afrodite furono rappresentate accanto ad un cigno mentre in epoca romana fu il simbolo del Cristo sulla croce.
Splendente costellazione del firmamento, il cigno è anche simbolo di realizzazione completa, in quanto simboleggia sia l’essenza maschile (il lungo collo, simbolo fallico) che quella femminile nel corpo candido e rotondo.
Il cigno è l‘androgino assoluto, il perfetto Uovo del Mondo poiché in esso sono condensate le due nature.
Nei simboli araldici lo troviamo negli stemmi di Boulogne – sur – Mer e di Zwichau in Sassonia.
Nel 1440 fu fondato come ordine cavalleresco l’”Ordine del Cigno” , rinnovato, poi dal re tedesco Federico Guglielmo II nel 1843, come ordine secolare di carità, tuttavia non entrò mai in vigore.
Soltanto nei bestiari medievali al cigno fu attribuita una valutazione negativa ponendo l’accento sul contrasto tra le sue bianche piume e le carni completamente nere.
”In tal modo è un’immagine dell’ipocrisia, la cui carne nera e peccaminosa è celata dalle bianchi vesti. Quando il cigno viene spogliato dal suo piumaggio bianco, la sua carne nera si arrostisce al fuoco. E così l’ipocrita alla sua morte viene spogliato di ogni ornamento terreno e scende nel fuoco dell’inferno”.
