Sekhmet “l’onnipotente” era una divinità guerriera adorata a Letopoli, capitale del II nomos del Basso Egitto, l’odierna Usim.
Nella triade menfita era sposa del demiurgo Ptah, loro figlio era Nefertem il dio loto.
La dea Sekhemet era rappresentata come una leonessa, o come una donna con la testa leonina coronata dal disco solare, simbolo che rimandava al suo essere, come Hathor, l’occhio di Ra.
Era anche assimilata alla dea Mut , sposa di Amon a Tebe, patrona dei medici ed in particolar modo dei chirurghi.
La dea aveva una duplice natura, benigna e malefica. Rappresentava il calore mortale di Ra e fu inviata dallo stesso dio a distruggere il genere umano, cosa che poi non fece.
Sekhemet era l’occhio di Ra di cui il dio si serviva spesso; la dea assumeva la forma di serpente e si poneva sulla fronte di Ra soffiando il fuoco contro i nemici del dio.
Sekhemet è colei che detiene la fiamma vendicatrice, colei che abbraccia Ra tra le sue spire durante le ore della notte.
Tra le varia raffigurazioni compare con Ptah su alcune stele rinvenute nel cimitero operaio ed in alcune tombe di Deir el Medina
Per rendersi propizia una dea tanto pericolosa, gli egizi inventarono il rito detto “dell’ammansimento di Sekhemet” ed i sacerdoti addetti al culto costituirono una corporazione di guerrieri che, per lottare contro le malattie, facevano ricorso a procedimenti magici.
