La morte di Tiberio il 13 marzo del 37 d.C. fu occasione di sollievo per il popolo romano.

Morto alla età di sessantotto anni, Tiberio aveva regnato per gli ultimi ventitre anni della sua vita. Fu considerato un tiranno, per via dei cattivi rapporti instaurati con il popolo, il senato e i militari.

Pare infatti che la sua morte non fu accidentale.

Caligola promosse amnistie, diminuì le tasse, organizzò giochi e feste, rese di nuovo legali i comizi. Tutti lo giudicarono con favore.

Tuttavia questo periodo felice non durò in eterno.

Dopo soli sette mesi da Imperatore, Caligola venne colto da una improvvisa e strana malattia. Ne uscì sconvolto nel fisico ma soprattutto nella mente.

Divenne rapidamente cinico, megalomane, sanguinario e assolutamente folle.

Condannava a morte per i motivi più futili, e spesso condannava due volte la stessa persona, non ricordando di averla già fatta uccidere.

I senatori, visto il pericolo che era diventato, tentarono di farlo assassinare, ma inutilmente.

Quando poi morì la sorella di Caligola, Drusilla, con la quale pare avesse avuto rapporti incestuosi, la salute mentale dell’imperatore ne risentì ancora di più.

Diventò rapidamente un autentico despota, facendosi chiamare Imperatore, oltre che padre della patria. Davanti a lui tutti dovevano genuflettersi, e aveva stabilito che il 18 marzo di ogni anno doveva diventare festa in suo onore.

Si faceva chiamare come gli dei: Giove, Nettuno, Mercurio, e Venere.

Spesso infatti si vestiva con abiti femminili, e portava braccialetti e gioielli vistosi.

Il suo regno durò solo quattro anni. Fu ucciso il 24 gennaio del 41, quando stava lasciando una arena durante i Ludi Palatini.

Lo pugnalarono trenta volte, con lui furono giustiziati tutti i parenti prossimi. Neppure la sua giovane bambina Giulia Drusilla venne risparmiata: fu scaraventata contro un muro.

Come suo padre, anche Caligola verrà ricordato come un tiranno.

Il regno passerà in mano a suo zio Claudio Germanico, cinquantenne, e unico parente superstite.
