Reagan Ronald
Da cow-boy a presidente degli Stati Uniti.

Nato nel 1911, figlio di un ciabattino, dopo gli studi superiori s’iscrive alla facoltà di Scienze Sociali.

Già celebre come giornalista sportivo in un’emittente radiofonica dell’Iowa, inizia la carriera cinematografica, interpretando più di 50 film soprattutto western.

Il primo incarico politico arriva negli anni ’50. Diventa presidente del sindacato attori, abbracciando posizioni conservatrici, ed è favorevole all’epurazione maccartista degli elementi filomarxisti degli studios. Dopo il divorzio con Jane Wyman, si risposa con Nancy Davis, che gli darà due figli.

Nel 1966 e nel 1970 viene eletto governatore della California. Nel 1980 sconfigge il democratico Carter e diventa il 40° presidenti degli Stati Uniti, il più anziano che ha ricoperto questa carica.

Rimane in carica per due mandati consecutivi dal 20 gennaio 1981 al 19 gennaio 1989.

Il 30 marzo 1981, subisce un grave attentato, ma dopo qualche settimana è già al lavoro. Il 25 ottobre 1983 ordina la prima operazione militare autorizzando l’invasione dell’isola di Grenada.

Il 19 novembre 1985 ha luogo il primo degli “incontri al vertice” con Gorbaciov.

Il 14 aprile 1986 Reagan autorizza un bombardamento su Tripoli, in risposta ad un attentato anti-americano a Berlino Ovest.

Nello stesso anno il presidente si trova sull’orlo dell’impeachment: è lo scandolo Irangate. L’intera amministrazione viene accusata di aver fornito illegalmente armi all’Iran, per finanziare con il ricavato i Contras del Nicaragua, accusa che ancora rischia di trascinare l’ex presidente in tribunale nel 1992.

Ronald Reagan muore il 6 giugno 2004. Aveva 93 e dal 1994 era affetto dal morbo di Alzhemier.
