MUMMIFICAZIONE

Il termine vasi canopi fu inventato dai primi egittologi che li avevano erroneamente collegati a Copono il comandante della nave di Menelao al ritorno della guerra di Troia.

In genere i vasi erano fatti di alabastro, ma se ne trovarono sia di calcare, che di terracotta e anche di ceramica smaltata.

Contenevano i visceri asportati dalle cavità del corpo durante la mummificazione ed erano posti nella camera sepolcrale della tomba accanto al sarcofago.

All’inizio i coperchi  erano molto semplici, poi iniziarono ad assumere, durate il Medio Regno, forme più complicate; dal periodo ramesside in poi furono decorati con le teste dei quattro “Figli di Horus“.

Sui vasi erano riportati testi che ponevano ciascuno di essi sotto la protezione di una dea.
