Il laboratorio d’imbalsamazione era un edificio a forma di T, costruito con materiali leggeri e ricoperti di stuoie intrecciate chiamato la “tenda della purificazione”.
Questi laboratori erano eretti sulle rive del sacro Nilo, in modo da avere a disposizione grandi quantitativi d’acqua per i lavaggi e le abluzioni rituali.

In seguito l’Uabet diventò un edificio smontabile che gli imbalsamatori costruivano dove il lavoro li chiamava.
Soltanto a Tebe, alcuni di questi edifici rimase fisso fino alla bassa epoca, soprattutto nella zona di Deir el Bahari.
All’interno della “sede pura” vi era un letto di pietra con il piano in leggera pendenza che terminava in un bacile semicircolare per contenere i liquidi.
I sacerdoti si occupavano delle varie operazioni:
il maestro delle cerimonie era Anubi, l’hery-sesheta (preposto ai misteri), il quale indossava una maschera che ritraeva Anubi “il dio-sciacallo” imbalsamatore di Osiride.
Chi compiva materialmente l’imbalsamazione era il khetemu-netjer (cancelliere divino), in origine un sacerdote di Osiride ad Abido che, con la VI dinastia, assunse il ruolo di capo degli imbalsamatori praticanti, coadiuvato da vari assistenti, i cosiddetti figli di Horus.
Il “Cancelliere divino” era il primo officiante e aveva il ruolo di Horus, figlio di Iside e Osiride.
Al suo fianco si trovavano sacerdoti-lettori o cerimonieri, incaricati di leggere le formule che accompagnavano le operazioni tecniche;.
Dovevano inoltre identificare le formule e le indicazioni riportare sulle bende e sui pezzi di stoffa ed eseguire i disegni rituali.
Accanto vi era uno stuolo di preparatori di unguenti, portatori d’acqua e di natron, addetti alle bende e al lavaggio dei visceri, cioè tutto il personale subalterno che era necessario per le operazioni dell’imbalsamazione.
Alcuni preparatori, di rango più elevato, operavano accanto al Cancelliere divino ed erano chiamati figli di Horus o di Khentienirti.
