L’assassinio di Giuliano De’ Medici
DINASTIE: I MEDICI
La Congiura dei Pazzi fu la cospirazione ordita dalla famiglia de’ Pazzi con lo scopo di stroncare il potere dei Medici. E’ una calda domenica d’aprile dell’anno 1478, il Duomo di Firenze è gremito per la celebrazione della messa cantata. Tra le persone più vicine all’altare maggiore, spiccano nei loro sontuosi abiti i membri della famiglia dei Medici, ricchi banchieri che praticamente governano la città da circa mezzo secolo.
Fianco a fianco il capo famiglia Lorenzo (che passerà alla storia con il nome di Magnifico) allora ventinovenne, e suo fratello minore Giuliano.
Il momento è solenne, la campana maggiore del Duomo scandisce il primo rintocco mentre l’ostia viene innalzata nel momento della consacrazione. Ad un tratto un violento trambusto, scoppia tra le persone vicine all’altare.
Due tra i fedeli, Bernardo Baroncelli e Francesco ‘de Pazzi (rivale dei Medici), estratte le spade che tutti portavano anche in chiesa, si scagliarono contro il giovane Giuliano colpendolo diciannove volte.
Nello stesso momento due uomini vestiti da ecclesiastici, estratti i pugnali, balzarono su Lorenzo.
A questo punto i quattro assassini si precipitarono in strada, dove secondo un piano prestabilito dovevano incontrarsi con altri congiurati per incitare i cittadini di Firenze a liberarsi di quella che loro bollavano come la “tirrania” dei Medici.
Questo fu il momento culminante della cosiddetta “congiura dei Pazzi”.
Tuttavia i congiurati avevano fatto male i loro conti. Il popolo si sollevò, ma contro gli assassini e i loro complici, ai quali venne data una caccia spietata, e man mano che furono trovati, uccisi. Un’unica macabra testimonianza ci è giunta in rappresentazione della vendetta del popolo fiorentino.
Il giovane Leonardo da Vinci, vide il corpo di uno dei congiurati penzolare da una finestra del Palazzo della Signoria (Palazzo Vecchio) e ne fece uno schizzo particolareggiato. Giuliano morì in seguito alle ferite riportate, ma Lorenzo sopravvisse e resse la repubblica fiorentina per un’altra quindicina d’anni.
