Iside Pelagia, cioè Iside del mare, Iside Euploia, quindi Iside della buona navigazione.
La Dea con l’equipaggio di Ra percorre un tragitto notturno negli inferi e su una barca di papiro va in cerca dei pezzi del cadavere di Osiride.

Nei Testi delle Piramidi Osiride è legato al “Grande verde”, cioè al Mediterraneo e al mare della Siria. Iside era sempre presente nella barca degli dei che di notte percorreva il mondo degli inferi.

La dea era oggetto di culto sia in mare che sulle rive, in particolare era la patrona della navi granarie che portavano i cereali dell’antico Egitto verso i porti di Roma.

Fu in questo modo che il culto di Iside si diffuse nelle città costiere dell’impero.

Spesso i marinai, prima di imbarcarsi per le traversate marine, le dedicavano offerte. Con l’aumento dei commerci egizi con altre regioni mediterranee molti battelli furono chiamati Iside. Sulle navi e sulle barche, per difenderle dalle tempeste, venivano dipinti anche degli “occhi di Horus”.

Uno dei simboli di Iside era il pilone d’ormeggio delle nave ed in seguito i remi e le ancore diventarono simboli del potere che la Dea deteneva per guidare le anime nella vita e nella morte.

La festa di Isidis Navigium, durante la quale veniva varata una barca dedicata alla dea del mare, segnava l’apertura della navigazione

La Ploiafesia, Isidis navigium, era il momento culminante del culto di Iside nell’epoca greco-romana. Due erano le date celebrate: il 5 marzo che segnava l’effettivo miglioramento delle condizioni del mare, ed in seguito, per avvicinare Iside agli imperatori romani, il 5-6 gennaio con un altro varo della nave sacra.
