LA COSTITUZIONE DEI LIBERI MURATORI

Massonerie e Logge

La Costituzione dei Liberi Muratori fu fondata in Inghilterra il 24 giugno del 1717 dal pastore protestante James Anderson e dai suoi amici John Desaguliers e John Montagu. Aveva come proposito quello di dare agli uomini delle regole per una condotta morale che insegnasse il buon comportamento dei singoli, la dignità collettiva, il rispetto della legge e della fede e il reciproco soccorso.

Le associazioni dei liberi muratori, avevano mantenuto un discreto potere anche per le capacità costruttive, di cui custodivano gelosamente i segreti, tramandandoli da maestro costruttore a maestro.

I maestri muratori, dunque, con il passare degli anni e il progredire delle scienze, avevano dovuto conferire soprattutto un valore ideale ai loro strumenti e alle loro regole, divenuti poco per volta dei simboli.

Proprio a questi simboli si rifaranno Anderson e soci.

In inglese muratore si dice macon. Le antiche corporazioni riunivano i liberi muratori, i free macon. Da qui il nome, in italiano, di framassoni.

E da lodge, il luogo delle riunioni, il corrispettivo italiano di loggia.

La Costituzione dei Liberi Muratori (1723)

I. Concernente Dio e la religione

Un muratore è tenuto per la sua condizione a obbedire alla legge morale. Se intende rettamente l’Arte non sarà mai un ateo stupido né un libertino irreligioso. Ma sebbene nei tempi antichi i Muratori fossero obbligati in ogni Paese ad essere della religione di tale Paese o Nazione, quale essa fosse, oggi peraltro si reputa più conveniente obbligarli soltanto a quella Religione nella quale tutti gli uomini convengono, lasciando loro le loro particolari opinioni. Ossia essere uomini buoni e sinceri o uomini di onore ed onestà, quali che siano le denominazioni o le persuasioni che li possono distinguere. Per cui la Muratoria diviene il Centro di Unione, e il mezzo per conciliare sincera amicizia fra persone che sarebbero rimaste perpetuamente distanti.

II. Del magistrato civile supremo e subordinato

Un Muratore è un pacifico suddito dei Poteri Civili. Ovunque egli risieda o lavori e non deve essere mai coinvolto in complotti e cospirazioni contro la pace e il benessere della Nazione, né condursi indebitamente verso i Magistrati inferiori. Poiché la Muratoria è stata sempre danneggiata da guerre, massacri e disordini, così gli antichi Re e Principi sono stati assai disposti ad incoraggiare gli uomini dell’Arte, a causa della loro tranquillità e lealtà. Per cui essi praticamente risposero ai cavilli dei loro avversari e promossero l’onore della fraternità che sempre fiorì nei tempi di pace. Cosicché se un Fratello divenisse un ribelle contro lo Stato, non deve essere favorito nella sua ribellione ma piuttosto compianto come uomo infelice; e, se non convinto di altro delitto, sebbene la leale Fratellanza possa e debba sconfessare la sua ribellione e non dare ombra o base per la gelosia politica del governo in essere, egli non può venire espulso dalla Loggia ed il suo vincolo rimane irrevocabile.

III. Delle Logge

Una loggia è un luogo dove i Muratori si raccolgono e operano. Per cui tale assemblea, o debitamente organizzata società di Muratori, è chiamata una Loggia. Ogni fratello deve appartenere ad una ed essere soggetto alle sue norme e ai regolamenti generali. Essa è particolare o generale e ciò si comprenderà meglio frequentandola e mediante i regolamenti inerenti della Loggia generale o Gran Loggia.

Nei tempi antichi, né Maestro né Compagno poteva esservi assente, specialmente quando convocato a comparirvi, senza incorrere in severa censura, salvo che non risultasse al Maestro e ai Sorveglianti che forza maggiore lo aveva impedito. Le persone ammesse come membri di una Loggia devono essere uomini buoni e sinceri, nati liberi e di età matura e discreta, non schiavi, non donne, non uomini immorali o scandalosi, ma di buona reputazione.

IV. Dei maestri, sorveglianti, compagni e apprendisti

Tutte le preferenze fra i Muratori sono fondate soltanto sul valore reale e sul merito personale. Così che i committenti siano serviti bene, che i Fratelli non debbano vergognarsi, né che l’Arte Reale venga disprezzata, Perciò nessun Maestro o Sorvegliante sia scelto per anzianità ma per il suo merito.

È impossibile descrivere tali cose per iscritto e ogni Fratello deve stare al suo posto e addestrarsi in una via peculiare a questa Fraternità.

I candidati possono sapere soltanto che nessun Maestro può assumere un Apprendista se non ha bastevole occupazione per lui. Se non è un giovane perfetto, non avente nel suo corpo mutilazioni o difetti che lo possano rendere incapace di apprendere l’Arte, di servire il committente del Maestro e di essere creato Fratello e poi a tempo debito Compagno d’Arte, quando egli abbia servito un termine di anni quale comporta il costume del Paese.

Che egli discenda da genitori onesti.

Che così, se altrimenti qualificato, egli possa accedere all’onore di essere il Sorvegliante e poi li Maestro della Loggia, il Gran Sorvegliante ed anche il Gran Maestro di tutte le Logge, secondo il suo merito. Nessun Fratello può essere Sorvegliante se non ha svolto il ruolo di Compagno d’Arte, né Maestro se non ha funzionato da Sorvegliante, nè Grande Sorvegliante se non è stato Maestro di una Loggia, né Gran Maestro se non è stato Compagno d’Arte prima della sua elezione, essendo anche di nobile nascita o gentiluomo delle più elevate maniere o eminente studioso od originale architetto o altro artista, discendente da genitori onesti e che sia di merito singolarmente grande nella opinione delle Logge. E per il migliore, più agevole e più onorevole adempimento di tale ufficio, il Gran Maestro ha il potere di scegliere il suo proprio Deputato Gran Maestro che deve essere, o essere stato precedentemente, il Maestro di una Loggia particolare, ed ha il privilegio di agire come può agire il Gran Maestro, suo principale, a meno che il detto principale sia presente o interponga la sua autorità con una lettera.
Questi Ordinatori o Governatori, supremi e subordinati, dell’antica Loggia, devono essere obbediti nei loro rispettivi ambiti da tutti i Fratelli, secondo gli antichi doveri e regolamenti, con tutta umiltà, reverenza, amore e alacrità.

V. Della condotta dell’arte nel lavoro

Tutti i Muratori devono lavorare onestamente nei giorni di lavoro, onde possano vivere decorosamente nei giorni di festa; e il tempo stabilito dalla legge del paese, o confermato dal costume, deve essere osservato.

Il più esperto dei Compagni d’Arte deve essere scelto o nominato Maestro, o sovraintendente del lavoro del committente. Deve essere chiamato Maestro da coloro che lavorano sotto di lui. Gli uomini dell’Arte devono evitare ogni cattivo linguaggio e non chiamarsi fra loro con alcun nome spregevole ma Fratello o Compagno ed essere cortesi fra loro sia dentro che fuori dalla Loggia.

Il Maestro, conscio della sua abilità, condurrà il lavoro del committente nel modo più ragionevole e lealmente impiegherà le sostanze di questi come se fossero le sue proprie; né darà ad alcun Fratello o Apprendista un salario superiore a quanto realmente merita.

Sia il Maestro che i Muratori riceventi il loro giusto salario devono essere fedeli al committente ed onestamente compiere il suo lavoro, sia a misura che a giornata. Non debbono lavorare a misura quando è ancora usanza lavorare a giornata.

Nessuno deve manifestare invidia per la prosperità di un Fratello, né soppiantarlo o fargli togliere il suo lavoro se egli è capace di compierlo.

Nessuno può finire il lavoro di un altro per l’utile del committente, se non ha piena coscienza dei progetti e dei disegni di colui che l’ha cominciato. Quando un Compagno dell’Arte è scelto come Sorvegliante del lavoro sotto il Maestro, egli deve essere leale sia col Maestro che coi Compagni, deve accuratamente sorvegliare il lavoro nell’assenza del Maestro a beneficio del committente;

I Fratelli devono obbedirgli.

Tutti i Muratori impiegati riceveranno il loro salario docilmente, senza mormorazioni e senza ribellioni, e non lasciare il Maestro fino a che il lavoro sia compiuto. Un Fratello più giovane deve venire istruito nel lavoro per impedire che sprechi materiale per inesperienza e perché si ingrandisca e si mantenga nell’amore fraterno. Tutti gli arnesi usati nel lavoro devono essere approvati dalla Gran Loggia. Nessun lavorante deve essere adibito a lavori propri della Muratoria, né i Liberi Muratori potranno mai lavorare con coloro che sono non liberi, senza una urgente necessità; né essi possono insegnare ai lavoranti e ai Muratori non accettati, come devono insegnare a un Fratello o Compagno

VI. Del Comportamento, ossia

1. Nella Loggia allorché costituita

Non dovete formare comitati particolari o separate conversazioni senza l’assenso del Maestro. Non trattare di alcuna cosa inopportuna o sconveniente. Non interrompere il Maestro o i Sorveglianti, o alcun Fratello che parla col Maestro,

Non occuparvi di cose ridicole o scherzose mentre la Loggia è impegnata in altre serie e solenni.

Non usare alcun linguaggio sconveniente sotto alcun pretesto. Rivolgere la dovuta riverenza al vostro Maestro, ai Sorveglianti, ai Compagni e inducendo questi al rispetto. Se qualsiasi accusa fosse promossa, il Fratello trovato colpevole deve accettare il giudizio e la decisione della Loggia, che è giudice idoneo e competente di tutte queste controversie (a meno che non portiate appello alla Gran Loggia) e davanti alla quale devono essere portate, a meno che un lavoro del committente non debba venire interrotto, nel qual caso ci si dovrà regolare opportunamente. Non dovete andare in giudizio per quanto concerne la Muratoria, senza assoluta necessità riconosciuta dalla Loggia.

2. Comportamento quando la Loggia è chiusa ed i Fratelli non sono usciti

Potete divertirvi con innocente allegria, trattandovi l’un l’altro a vostro talento, ma evitando ogni eccesso, o di spingere alcun Fratello a mangiare o bere oltre la sua inclinazione o di impedirgli di andare quando le circostanze lo chiamano, o di fare o dire cose offensive e che possono impedire una facile e libera conversazione.

Poiché questo turberebbe la nostra armonia e vanificherebbe i nostri lodevoli propositi.

Perciò né ripicche o questioni personali possono essere introdotte entro la porta della Loggia, ancor meno qualsiasi questione inerente la Religione o le Nazioni o la politica dello Stato, noi essendo soltanto, come Muratori, della summenzionata Religione Universale. Noi siamo inoltre di tutte le Nazioni, Lingue, Discendenze e Idiomi e siamo avversi a tutte le politiche, come a quanto non ha mai portato al benessere della Loggia né potrebbe portarlo mai. Questo dovere è stato sempre strettamente posseduto e osservato; ma specialmente dal tempo della Riforma in Britannia, o il dissenso e la secessione di tali nazioni dalla Comunione di Roma.

3. Comportamento quando i Fratelli si incontrano senza estranei ma non in una Loggia costituita

Vi dovete salutare l’un l’altro in modo cortese, come siete stati istruiti, chiamandovi Fratello l’un l’altro. liberamente fornendovi scambievoli istruzioni che possano essere utili, senza essere visti o uditi, e senza prevalere l’un sull’altro o venendo meno al rispetto dovuto ad ogni Fratello, come se non fosse Muratore.

Per quanto tutti i Muratori siano, come Fratelli, allo stesso livello, pure la Muratoria non toglie ad un uomo quell’onore di cui godeva prima; piuttosto aumenta tale onore, specialmente se egli avrà benemeritato della Fratellanza si deve onore a colui cui è dovuto, ed evitare le cattive maniere.

4. Comportamento in presenza di estranei non Massoni.

Sarete cauti nelle vostre parole e nel vostro portamento affinché l’estraneo più accorto non possa scoprire o trovare quanto non è conveniente che apprenda; e talvolta dovrete sviare un discorso e manipolarlo prudentemente per l’onore della rispettabile Fratellanza.

5. Comportamento in casa e nelle vicinanze

Dovete agire come si conviene a uomo morale e saggio; particolarmente non lasciate che la vostra famiglia, amici e vicini conoscano quanto riguarda la Loggia, ecc. ma saggiamente tutelate l’onore vostro e quello dell’antica Fratellanza, per ragioni da non menzionare qui.

Voi dovete anche tutelare la vostra salute non intrattenendovi troppo a lungo o troppo lontano da casa, dopo che le ore di Loggia sono passate. Eviterete la ghiottoneria e l’ubriachezza, affinché le vostre famiglie non siano trascurate od offese, né voi inabilitati a lavorare.

6. Comportamento verso un Fratello straniero

Lo esaminerete cautamente, conducendovi secondo un metodo di prudenza affinché non siate ingannati da un ignorante falso Pretendente, che dovrete respingere con disprezzo e derisione) guardandovi dal fargli alcun segno di riconoscimento.

Ma se accertate che egli è un vero e genuino Fratello, dovete rispettarlo di conseguenza.

Se egli è in bisogno, dovete aiutarlo se potete, oppure indirizzarlo dove possa venire aiutato: Dovete occuparlo per qualche giornata di lavoro oppure raccomandarlo perché venga occupato. Ma non siete obbligato a fare oltre la vostra possibilità, soltanto a preferire un Fratello povero, che è un uomo buono e sincero, prima di qualsiasi altra persona povera nelle stesse circostanze.

Finalmente, tutti questi doveri voi dovete osservare ed anche quelli che vi saranno comunicati per altra via.

Coltivando l’amore fraterno, la pietra di fondazione e di volta, il cemento e la gloria di questa antica Fratellanza, evitando tutte le dispute e questioni, tutte le maldicenze e calunnie. Non consentendo agli altri di diffamare qualsiasi onesto Fratello, ma difendendo il suo carattere e dedicandogli i migliori uffici per quanto consentito dal vostro onore e sicurezza e non oltre. E se qualcuno vi fa ingiuria, dovete rivolgervi alla vostra o alla sua Loggia e, dopo, appellarvi alla Gran Loggia nelle assemblee trimestrali e quindi alla Gran Loggia annuale, come è stato l’antico lodevole costume dei nostri antenati in ogni Nazione.

Non dovete intraprendere un processo legale a meno che il caso non possa venire risolto in altro modo e pazientemente affidatevi all’onesto e amichevole consiglio del Maestro e dei Compagni. Allorché essi vogliono evitare che voi compariate in giudizio contro estranei e vi esortano ad accelerare il corso della giustizia, che cosi farete meglio l’interesse della Muratoria con migliore alacrità e successo.

Rispetto a Compagni o Fratelli in giudizio, il Maestro e i Fratelli dovranno gentilmente offrire la loro mediazione, che a loro deve essere con riconoscenza affidata dai Fratelli contendenti,

Se tale sottomissione è impraticabile, questi potranno condurre il loro processo o causa, senza animosità e senza collera (non nel modo comune), facendo, od omettendo quanto possa compromettere l’amore fraterno, e buoni uffici devono essere rinnovati e continuati.

Che tutti possano vedere la benefica influenza della Muratoria, come tutti i veri Muratori hanno fatto dal principio del mondo e faranno fino alla fine del tempo.
