Matteotti Giacomo

Nato a Fratta Polesine nel 1885 uomo politico socialista, dedicò tutti i suoi sforzi prevalentemente ai problemi economici e finanziari.

Fu un seguace di Turati.

Strenuo oppositore del fascismo, denunciò alla Camera il regime di violenza imperante, soprattutto nel suo ultimo discorso il 30 maggio 1924 che gli costò la vita.

Il 10 giugno, a Roma sul lungotevere, fu aggredito da Dumini, Volpi, Malacria, Poveromo e Viola,. Sicari fascisti che lo rapirono facendolo salire nell’automobile di Filipelli dove fu pugnalato a morte.

Gli esecutori materiali del delitto Matteotti, di cui furono corresponsabili alte personalità del fascismo, rimasero sostanzialmente impuniti nel processo-beffa di Chieti.

Solo nel 1947, con un nuovo processo furono condannati all’ergastolo commutato poi in 30 anni di reclusione.

Il corpo di Matteotti fu ritrovato per caso solo il 16 agosto, dal cane di un brigadiere dei Carabinieri in licenza, in un bosco nel comune di Riano. Il corpo fu sottoposto al riconoscimento dei familiari e poi trasferito momentaneamente al cimitero di Riano ove restò più di due mesi.

Mussolini ordinò al ministro degli Interni Luigi Federzoni di preparare imponenti funerali da tenersi però a Fratta Polesine, città natale di Matteotti in modo da non dare troppo nell’occhio.

La vedova di Matteotti qualche giorno prima dei funerali scrisse a Federzoni chiedendo che al funerale non fossero presenti esponenti del PNF e della Milizia:.

« Chiedo che nessuna rappresentanza della Milizia fascista sia di scorta al treno. Nessun milite fascista di qualunque grado o carica comparisca, nemmeno sotto forma di funzionario di servizio.  Chiedo che nessuna camicia nera si mostri davanti al feretro e ai miei occhi durante tutto il viaggio, né a Fratta Polesine, fino a tanto che la salma sarà sepolta.

Voglio viaggiare come semplice cittadina, che compie il suo dovere per poter esigere i suoi diritti. Indi, nessuna vettura-salon, nessun scompartimento riservato, nessuna agevolazione o privilegio. Nessuna disposizione per modificare il percorso del treno quale risulta dall’orario di dominio pubblico.

Se ragioni di ordine pubblico impongono un servizio d’ordine, sia esso affidato solamente a soldati d’Italia. »
