La torre dei teschi

Per oltre 500 anni fu considerata una leggenda tramandata di generazione in generazione. Una leggenda capace di terrorizzare i conquistadores spagnoli, giunti in Messico per espugnare quella che una volta era la capitale dell’impero azteco: Tenochtitlan.

Le scoperte archeologiche, iniziate nel 2015, svelarono che non era una leggenda, ma una parte di storia che poco conosciamo.

Svelarono che ci sono dei rituali che ancora non conosciamo, poiché tra i seicentosettantasei teschi rinvenuti, ve ne sono diversi di bambini e di donne.

La torre, dissotterrata nel cuore di Città del Messico, era composta da teschi di donne e bambini. Il ritrovamento pone nuove domande inerenti la cultura dei sacrifici di questa civiltà precolombiana.

Infatti, i ricercatori si aspettavano di trovare solo crani di giovani uomini.

Combattenti sconfitti e catturati, le cui teste erano usate come ornamento in molte culture mesoamericane.

“È qualcosa di cui non avevamo traccia, questa è veramente una novità”, scrisse Rodrigo Bolanos, antropologo biologico che aveva esaminato il materiale disseppellito.

I teschi – continua l’antropologo – sarebbero stati depositati all’interno della torre dopo l’esposizione al pubblico su uno tzompantli, un tipo d’intelaiatura di legno utilizzata proprio a tale scopo.

La struttura si trova vicino al sito di Templo Mayor, in un angolo della cappella dedicata a Huitzilopochtli: il dio azteco del Sole, della guerra e dei sacrifici umani.
