E’ il 1519 quando Cortèz sbarca sulle coste del Messico.

Dopo meno di un’anno è alle porte di Tenochtitlán, la splendida capitale azteca, che sorge su un lago dell’altopiano centrale.

Cortèz può contare sul sostegno di alcune popolazioni che mal sopportano il dominio azteco e di un appoggio navale costituito da tredici brigantini armati di un cannone ed equipaggiati da venticinque soldati.

La flottiglia spagnola copre l’avanzata degli uomini di Cortèz cannoneggiando le canoe da guerra azteche.

L’assedio dura due mesi, i prigionieri spagnoli sono immolati sulle piramidi. I combattimenti tra i Tlaxcaltechi, alleati dagli spagnoli, e gli aztechi capeggiati da Cuauhtemoc diventano sempre più sanguinosi.

Giunti a Tenochtitlán, difesa da quindicimila uomini, gli assedianti devono combattere strada per strada.

Tuttavia la fame e la sete hanno già mietuto migliaia di vittime tra la popolazione, vittime che aumenteranno a causa delle malattie portate dai conquistatori.

Il Messico, con la sua straordinaria ricchezza di metalli, diventa così la più importante colonia spagnola, rendendo la Spagna la più grande potenza imperiale del Cinquecento.
