BATTAGLIE E GUERRE
La vittoria navale di Horatio Nelson stronca il piano napoleonico per invadere l’Inghilterra.
Fine dell’anno 1804.
La Francia di Napoleone è impegnata dalla Marina inglese, che bloccandone i porti, ne minaccia le rotte. Napoleone decide di mettere a punto un piano per distruggere la flotta inglese ed invadere l’isola.
Il piano prevede che la flotta franco-spagnola, al comando di Pierre de Villeneuve, attiri quella inglese di Horatio Nelson nei Carabi, per poi risalire rapidamente nella Manica per sostenere l’invasione.
Il piano riesce solo parzialmente.
Villeneuve, tra marzo ed agosto 1805, attira la flotta nemica verso le Indie Occidentali. Il 22 luglio viene però intercettato da una squadra navale inglese a Capo Finisterre e dopo uno scontro senza esito, Villeneuve decide di ritirarsi a Cadice.
Dall’Inghilterra salpa la flotta di Nelson alla volta di Gibilterra.
Ad Ottobre Villeneuve è ancora fermo a Cadice, Napoleone è bloccato a Boulogne, mentre Nelson è ormai nella zona di Cadice. Villeneuve decide allora di salpare per la Manica, ma alcune fregate inglesi ancorate al largo del porto danno l’allarme.
Il 21 ottobre lo scontro a Capo Trafalgar.
La flotta franco-spagnola procede in fila; a questo punto scatta il piano di Nelson che divide la propria flotta a metà. Le due parti attaccano lateralmente.
Il loro compito è quello di tagliare in due la flotta nemica. La parte comandata da Nelson attacca verso centro, l’altra comandata dall’ammiraglio Cuthbert Collingwood più a sud per colpirne la retroguardia.
Armati di cannoni fissi sulle fiancate, Nelson adottò la tattica del “taglio a T”, in pratica tagliò la rotta all’avversario, che con la prua completamente disarmata non poté combattere. Il combattimento si trasformò in tanti duelli tra navi.
In uno di questi Nelson fu ucciso da un colpo di moschetto.
Alle 16.30 fallito il piano d’invasione napoleonico, gli inglesi sono padroni del mare.
A causa di una tempesta diciotto delle ventidue navi catturate affondarono. Il dominio sui mari della Royal Navy rimarrà tale fino alla Prima Guerra Mondiale .
