Upuaut era venerato durante il Medio Regno a Licopodi, l’attuale Assiut, il suo nome significava “colui che apre le strade“.

La sua immagine, raffigurata come un lupo stilizzato dipinta su un’insegna, era alla testa dei soldati che marciavano durante le spedizioni.

In seguito fu poi identificato con il dio Anubi.

Nei “misteri di Osiride” che si svolgevano ad Adibo, il dio-lupo aveva un ruolo molto importante.

Nella cerimonia Upuaut rivestiva molteplici funzioni:

era Horus figlio di Osiride, ma anche Harendotes, cioè Horus vendicatore di suo padre.

In questa veste ricopriva la funzione di “figlio suo amato” e di sacerdote, dovendo procedere ai riti funerari che venivano compiuti sul corpo del padre.

Presiedeva inoltre ai riti per la rinascita, nel Castello o “casa dell’oro”, il laboratorio sacro annesso ad ogni tempio dove si praticava il rituale dell’ apertura della bocca.

In queste cerimonie il dio appariva come un canide o un lupo e allo stesso tempo il sovrano assumeva nelle processioni il ruolo di Upuaut come figlio di Osiride.
