UNGHERIA – BIOGRAFIE
Erzsébet Bathory nacque nel 1560 da una facoltosa e importante famiglia. A undici anni, a differenza delle sue coetanee che erano appena capaci di leggere e scrivere, Erzsébet sapeva già leggere in latino, conosceva la Bibbia e la storia d’Ungheria.
La sua infanzia trascorse in uno dei castelli di famiglia con i fratelli.
Quando aveva dieci anni il padre morì e fu promessa in sposa al conte Ferencz Nadasdy, un nobile del suo paese. Si sposarono nel 1575: Erzsébet aveva quindici anni.
Dopo dieci anni di matrimonio aveva messo al mondo quattro figli e sembra che dedicasse tutto il proprio tempo libero alla magia nera.
In una lettera che la contessa inviò al marito in guerra sul fronte valacco scriveva:
“Mi hanno insegnato una procedura di magia: prendi una gallina nera e percuotila a morte con un bastone bianco. Raccogli il sangue e spargine un po’ sul tuo nemico. Se non hai la possibilità di spargerlo sul suo corpo, procurati un suo indumento e spargilo sopra questo”…
Il suo castello, nei boschi di Csejthe, divenne ben presto un ritrovo per maghi, streghe e forse anche alchimisti.
Con il passare degli anni per la contessa ci fu un solo interesse: la conquista dell’eterna giovinezza. Venne a sapere che un elisir eccezionale era costituito dal sangue delle vergini: da quel giorno non riuscì a pensare ad altro.
Sicuramente Erzsébet aveva molti problemi psichici.
Si hanno infatti notizie di numerose crisi nervose che si manifestavano con acuti mal di testa e lunghi stati catatonici dai quali si risvegliava con una irrefrenabile sete di sangue. Inoltre aveva scoperto che torturando le cameriere le sue crisi cessavano, scomparivano mal di testa e convulsioni e spesso subentrava uno stato molto vicino all’estasi mistica.
Ben presto le segrete di Csejthe si riempirono di giovani donne, probabilmente invitate a lavorare per la contessa dietro il miraggio di un grosso compenso. Quando arrivavano al castello molte di loro erano sacrificate e il loro sangue utilizzato dalla Bathory per il suo sogno di eterna gioventù.
Quando una delle vittime riuscì a scappare ebbe inizio il declino della Sanguinaria contessa. I fatti giunsero a Mattia II d’Austria.
Il 30 dicembre 1610 Erzsébet fu arrestata con numerosi suoi collaboratori.
Nelle celle del castello furono ritrovate molte ragazze, parecchie segnate da piccole ferite prodotte dai servi della contessa per prelevare il sangue da offrire alla padrona. Nelle segrete del castello furono ritrovati i resti di seicentodieci vittime, in maggioranza donne.
Il processo fu celebrato a Bicse: iniziò il 2 gennaio 1611 e terminò il 7 dello stesso mese.
Tutti i collaboratori della Bathory furono giustiziati dopo essere stati sottoposti a tremende torture; per le donne che aveva aiutato la contessa ci fu il rogo con l’accusa di stregoneria.
Per la nobile invece la condanna a morte fu commutata in segregazione a vita nella sua camera di Csejthe.
Nel marzo 1611 la porta fu murata lasciando solo un piccolo spazio necessario per il passaggio del cibo.
Morì il 14 agosto 1614 senza che nessuno avesse avuto modo di conoscere con precisione quali fossero i riti praticati con il sangue di tante giovani innocenti vittime.
