Corrotta, perversa, incestuosa o semplicemente usata come merce di scambio per le mire ambiziose di suo padre Rodrigo, Papa Alessandro VI?

Fu davvero così bella Lucrezia Borgia, come asseriva Pietro Bembo tanto da conservare un suo ricciolo d’oro tra le proprie carte?

Non si hanno dati precisi sulla sua nascita. Il più attendibile la farebbe risalire al 19 aprile 1480 a Subiaco, terzogenita di Rodrigo Borgia e Vannozza Cattanei. Ebbe tre fratelli: Juan, Cesare e Jofrè. Lucrezia viene educata nel convento di San Sisto e in seguito affidata alla cure della cugina del Papa, Adriana Mila.

A dodici anni fu fatta fidanzare, per procura, con Don Gaspare da Procida, un nobile spagnolo. Vincolo che fu poi sciolto dal padre che la diede in moglie a Giovanni Sforza.

Il matrimonio, avvenuto nel 1493, non nasce sotto i migliori auspici. Nella primavera del 1494 la coppia, che vive a Roma, si trasferisce a Pesaro, non si sa se a causa di un’epidemia di peste o per paura dei francesi.

Il Papa impone che la sua amante Giulia con la suocera si unisca alla coppia. Tuttavia Giulia contravvenendo agli ordini papali raggiunge il marito Orsino e nonostante Alessandro VI la rimproveri aspramente, non fa convincere a tornare da lui.

Successivamente, dopo la pace tra i due amanti, saranno proprio i francesi a catturare le donne mentre rientrano a Roma e solo grazie alla mediazione degli Sforza e ad un cospicuo riscatto, Alessandro VI potrà riavere le sue donne.

Al Papa le nozze della figlia, non sono più tanto convenienti, questo lo intuisce anche Giovanni che torna a Roma per reclamare la moglie.

Tutto inutile.

E capisce che non gli conviene mettersi contro i Borgia che potrebbero toglierlo di mezzo molto in fretta.

Cerca allora appoggio dallo zio Ludovico il Moro, a Milano, ma è tutto inutile ed iniziano gli scontri e le ingiurie. I Borgia accusano Giovanni di essere un marito solo di nome, quest’ultimo accusa Lucrezia di essere l’amante del padre e del fratello.

I Borgia vogliono annullare il matrimonio, perché non consumato, Giovanni non cede.

A Roma, intanto, si decide di far visitare Lucrezia che viene dichiarata “virgo intacta”. Il matrimonio viene annullato il 20 dicembre 1497, Lucrezia aveva 17 anni.

Che motivo aveva il Papa per annullare il matrimonio, suscitando tanto clamore ed esponendo la figlia ai pettegolezzi ed al lubridio della folla?

Comunque Lucrezia per riprendersi, si rifugia in convento, ma voci insistenti dicono che è un’altra la ragione. Lucrezia deve partorire. Ma se il matrimonio non è stato consumato, se lei è stata dichiarata “virgo intacta” com’è possibile tutto ciò? Si vocifera che il bambino sia di suo padre o di suo fratello Cesare, altri fanno svariati nomi. Non si ha nemmeno la prova che Lucrezia sia la vera madre, ma che il bambino sia figlio del Papa e della sua amante Giulia Farnese.

Il piccolo, battezzato Giovanni, passerà alla storia come “l’infante romano”.

Il 15 giugno 1497 il duca di Gandia, Juan, fratello di Lucrezia, viene ripescato cadavere nel Tevere. Subito i sospetti si addensano su Cesare che ha sempre ambito al posto di capitano delle truppe pontificie occupato da Juan.

Alcuni invece dicono che Cesare abbia ucciso Juan, perché quest’ultimo era l’amante di Lucrezia e padre dell’infante romano.

Il 21 luglio 1498 Lucrezia si sposa nuovamente.

Le nozze celebrate in Vaticano con Alfonso d’Aragona, duca di Risceglie, finiscono tragicamente anche queste. Cesare, che era stato rifiutato da Carlotta d’Aragona, sposa Carlotta d’Albert di Navarra, re Luigi lo nomina duca di Valentinois in cambio dell’aiuto di Cesare a riconquistare il regno di Napoli. Alfonso allarmato si rifugia dai suoi parenti, abbandonando Lucrezia che aspetta un bambino.

Sconvolgendo gli alti prelati, il Papa per risollevare il morale di Lucrezia, la nomina governatrice di Spoleto, dove svolgerà diligentemente il suo incarico. Il 19 settembre 1489 Alfonso, dietro pressione del padre, raggiunge Lucrezia ed insieme tornano a Roma, dove nel mese di Novembre Lucrezia da alla luce un maschietto che viene chiamato Rodrigo.

Il 15 luglio 1500 Alfonso viene ferito gravemente. Il colpevole è Cesare, motivo la gelosia nei confronti della sorella.

Assistito dai migliori medici del Papa, nonostante le gravi ferite, con grande gioia di Lucrezia, Alfonso riuscirà a guarire. Durante la degenza Lucrezia non ha mai abbandonato il suo sposo, tuttavia il 18 agosto dopo averla fatta allontanare con un pretesto, Michelotto da Corella, sicario di Cesare, uccide Alfonso proprio nelle stanze di Lucrezia.

Interviene nuovamente il Papa a consolare la vedova nominandola governatrice di Nepi. Intanto, mentre Lucrezia è lontana, il Papa pensa ad un nuovo matrimonio per lei in cerca di nuove alleanze e incarica Cesare di raggiungerla a Nepi per comunicarglielo.

Il candidato è Alfonso d’Este di Ferrara. Forse per Lucrezia, a 21 anni, si può aprire una nuova vita lontana dalla sua famiglia.

Tuttavia gli Este non la pensano così, troppe le maldicenze su Lucrezia. Ma nonostante tutte le contrarietà il 30 dicembre 1501 la nozze vengono celebrate.

Lucrezia riuscirà, se non proprio a farsi amare dal marito, almeno a farsi rispettare, anche se verrò tradita ripetutamente. Gli darà sette figli, tre dei quali moriranno subito dopo la nascita.

A Ferrara Lucrezia è finalmente serena, per quanto le sarà possibile continuerà a proteggere il fratello Cesare.

Lucrezia morirà nel 1509 a soli 29 anni di setticemia in seguito ad un parto
