Castello di Fenis

Il castello di Fenis è situato su di un poggio erboso, affacciato sulla sponda destra della Dora e a lato della strada che attraversa il paese.

Colpisce il visitatore sia per la sua struttura architettonica, sia per il percorso interno, un continuo susseguirsi di ambienti comunicanti tra loro per mezzo di scale, loggiati e porte segrete.

Il castello come lo vediamo oggi, è a pianta pentagonale con una doppia mura di cinta

Così si presentava nella seconda metà del XIV secolo. Tuttavia alcune opere invasive risalenti al periodo 1935 – 1942 ne hanno modificato alcuni aspetti, un esempio è l’ingresso della prima cinta che risale proprio ai restauri eseguiti nel periodo fascista.

Nei primi due decenni del Quattrocento Bonifacio I figlio di Aimone, abbellì gli interni del castello con vari affreschi nel cortile, nella cappella e con la costruzione di nuove finestre portando il castello al suo massimo splendore.

Con la sua morte avvenuta nel 1426 l’edificio iniziò la sua lenta decadenza.

Venduto nel 1716 fu in seguito trasformato in fattoria e pesantemente danneggiato. Nel 1895 Alfredo D’Andrade, sovrintendente ai Monumenti del Piemonte, lo acquistò per donarlo allo Stato.

Iniziarono le opere di restauro che a differenza di quelle effettuate nel 1935, rispettarono la costruzione originale.

Il castello è difeso da due cinte murarie: quella esterna presenta sei torri poste nei punti più vulnerabili con feritoie e camminamenti di ronda.
Il secondo ingresso è difeso da una torre quadrata che si apre nel corpo di una torre trecentesca munita di ronde e di caditoie da cui anticamente si manovrava una saracinesca che insieme con una porta chiudeva il passaggio.

La seconda cerchia, anch’essa munita di feritoie e cammino di ronda con alte merlature a coda di rondine, ingloba a destra dell’ingresso una piccola torre che fungeva da colombaia, nel lato nord si possono vedere quelle che erano le scuderie e il fienile.

Il corpo centrale è dotato di alte mura rinforzate e contornate sulla sommità da merlature e cammino di ronda da cui sporgono verso l’interno i doccioni in pietra.

Sul lato occidentale del castello, si trova una grande torre quadrata, forse una trasformazione del primitivo mastio. Vi sono altre due torri quadrate: una posta sul varco della seconda cerchia di mura, mentre l’altra funge da ingresso.

L’ingresso del castello, fiancheggiato da due corpi di guardia, si apre sul cortile a forma trapezoidale sormontato da un portico a due arcate.

La scalinata semicircolare che porta al balcone del primo piano si divide in due rampe che permettono di raggiungere le varie stanze affacciate sul balcone. La parete è affrescata da una scena cavalleresca in cui San Giorgio uccide il drago.

Sui muri del primo piano saggi e filosofi dell’antichità reggono pergamene con motti e sentenze risalenti ai primi decenni del Quattrocento.

Dal cortile si accede alle cantine e alle prigioni tramite una scala che scende nei livelli più bassi del castello. Al fianco della scalinata una porta permette di raggiungere la sala d’armi.

Altre splendide raffigurazioni possiamo ammirarle nel salone di rappresentanza e nella cappella. Tra queste è visibile l’affresco della Crocifissione e della Madonna della Misericordia, in cui la Vergine protegge l‘umanità sotto il suo mantello.

Il castello di Fénis rimane uno dei pochi esempi di costruzione medievale della Valle d’Aosta, nonostante gli arredi interni risalenti a periodi successivi.
