Il Faraone, nell’ antico Egitto, era la suprema autorità della piramide sociale Egizia. La parola “Faraone” significa “grande casa”. Il sovrano veniva raffigurato con la barba ricurva oppure fissata al mento da un nastro.

Altri simboli mostravano il suo potere:

la corona, bianca dell’Alto Egitto, rossa del Basso Egitto, doppia quella del Paese unificato.

Attaccata alla cintola del gonnellino aveva una coda di animale, variamente identificata in una coda di cane o di toro. Il Re impugnava un bastone pastorale ricurvo ed il flagello.

Sulla sua testa compariva spesso l’Ureos, il serpente cobra femmina, rappresentazione dell’occhio del dio solare; sulle spalle era appollaiato il falco Horus, figlio di Iside ed Osiride.

Al sovrano ci si poteva avvicinare solo nell’atto del suddito che si prostra sino a baciare la terra, la sua nascita era preceduta da apparizioni miracolose che ne anticipavano la consacrazione.

La giornata tipo del Faraone era minuziosamente organizzata, da una parte gli impegni ufficiali, dall’altra le occupazioni domestiche.

Quanto si sa dei Faraoni vivi, dei loro pensieri, dei sentimenti é nulla rispetto a quello che si sa di loro da morti.
