La legge Basaglia, non è stata una legge perfetta, non ha dato la dovuta assistenza ai familiari dei malati e non c’erano strutture adeguate ad ospitare quei malati che non avevano più nessuno.

Tuttavia aprendo le porte dei manicomi ha posto fine ad una situazione da film horror.

Ben più tragico era nei secoli scorsi. Siamo agli inizi dell’ottocento.

Nei manicomi si trovavano i folli, ma anche i sifilitici, chi aveva malattie croniche della pelle, semplici esaurimenti oppure era diventato scomodo o scandaloso per la famiglia
I pavimenti erano umidi, in pietra con un breve canale che conduceva ad un buco dove veniva fatto scolare lo sporco.

Alle finestre inferriate, le porte erano spesse e non c’era nessun strumento per il riscaldamento invernale, ovunque un tanfo incredibile deriva dai bagni.

I letti in ferro erano pochi, per lo più sono cassoni di legno con paglia per dormire e inoltre gabbie per gli isterici.

Stefano Bonacossa, un dottore di Torino, compì un viaggio nei vari manicomi europei.

Nel 1838 scriveva nel suo diario che le prime cause di pazzia per la donna erano: eredità, stravizi ed abuso di liquori, conseguenze di parto, sifilide, colpi sul capo, disturbi della mestruazione, gelosia ed amore contrariato, esaltazione religiosa.

Anche l’epilessia era considerata come pazzia, come l’ambizione e la cattiva condotta.

Le stesse cause erano simili per gli uomini aggiungendo l’eccesso negli studi.

Nei manicomi c’erano parecchi mezzi di coercizione, il corsaletto di forza (che si chiamerà poi camicia di forza), le maniche di cuoio, pastoie di catene di ferro e all’ occorrenza alcuni malati erano legati agli alberi nei cortili.

Come venivano curati i malati di mente?

Si usavano salassi generali e parziali, ghiaccio sul capo, bagni tiepidi prolungati, docce fredde, purganti, cauterio alla nuca con potassa caustica, che veniva anche usata per le donne senza mestruazioni strofinandogliela sulle cosce.

Se di notte i malati diventano irrequieti o nervosi ecco che arrivava l’oppio.

In alcuni manicomi criminali i letti erano legati ai muri, i pazienti vestiti miseramente e alle pareti lamine di ferro con anelli ai quali legare gli agitati.

Se c’erano dei luoghi nei quali i malati venivano trattati con decenza, erano le strutture private, mentre in moltissimi luoghi pubblici furono rinchiusi in grotte e prigioni, trattati come bestie feroci, bastonati, incatenati oppure sottoposti al supplizio della fame e della sete.

Musil, in “L’uomo senza qualità” scriveva:

«Se un cavallo a ogni tentativo di cavalcarlo si comporta da matto, viene governato con cura speciale, gli si danno i finimenti più morbidi, i migliori cavalieri, il foraggio più scelto e il trattamento più paziente.

Se invece un cavaliere commette qualche mancanza, lo si ficca in una gabbia piena di pulci, lo si priva del mangiare e lo si ammanetta».
