MITOLOGIA IRLANDESE
Un giorno Midir, principe dei Tuatha De Danann, mentre si stava recando in visita al dio Aengus Og presso la sua dimora a Brú na Bóinne, lungo il fiume Boyne, s’imbatté in una giovane principessa di nome Etain.

Midir era furioso con Fuamnach per ciò che aveva fatto, ma non quanto l’era lei per il modo in cui il marito continuava ad amare Etain.
La donna decise quindi di liberarsi di Etain definitivamente e scatenò un vento talmente forte che spinse la farfalla fuori dal palazzo trascinandola fino alle dimore del dio Aengus Og.
Quando Fuamnach lo scoprì, provocò un altro vento per cacciare Etain lontano da lì.
Per sette anni la farfalla fu sospinta dal vento attraverso il paese fino a quando giunse alla residenza di Etar un capotribù dell’Ulster.
Lì, esausta, cadde nella coppa di vino della moglie di Etar che la inghiottì con la bevanda e nove mesi nacque una bimba che fu chiamata Etain.

Naturalmente Etain era certa che Eochai non l’avrebbe mai lasciata andare.
Un giorno Midir tornò al palazzo di Eochai e lo sfidò in una serie di partite di scacchi. Prima dell’ultima partita, i due uomini stabilirono che il vincitore avrebbe potuto chiedere qualunque cosa avesse desiderato.
Midir vinse e chiese un abbraccio e un bacio da parte di Etain, il re era sbigottito, ma accettò che Midir si prendesse ciò che voleva entro un mese.
