La battaglia di Moytura fu una delle più grandi del mito irlandese.
Vide il popolo dei Tuatha De Danann, guidati dal loro eroe Lugh, scontrarsi con i fomoriani, il cui campione, il gigante Balor, possedeva un “occhio malefico” in grado di annientare le persone con semplice sguardo.
La guerra tra i Tuatha De Danann e i fomoriani scoppiò dopo che Nuada, il re dei De Danann, perse una mano in battaglia.
Questi ultimi, ritenendo poco saggio farsi governare da un re con una mano sola, scelsero come successore di Nuada un guerriero di nome Bres.
Essendo questi di madre De Dannan e di padre fomoriano, la speranza era di una coesistenza pacifica tra i due popoli.
Invece Bres si rivelò un pessimo sovrano che trattò duramente i De Dannan.
Oltre a non concedere nessuna ospitalità o trattamento regale, li obbligò a pagare pesanti tributi e costrinse i loro campioni a svolgere umili mansioni, come scavare fosse e trasportare legna da ardere.
I De Dannan non sopportando più tale situazione minacciarono di cacciare il nuovo re. Bres li pregò di lasciarlo regnare per altri sette anni e loro accettarono, anche se con riluttanza.
Bres, il cui intento era di regnare fino alla fine dei suoi giorni, si recò dai fomoriani per formare un grande esercito con il quale sottomettere i De Dannan.
Guidato dai campioni Balor e Indech, questo potente esercito si radunò per combattere contro i De Dannan.
I De Dannan non rimasero a guardare.
Nuada fu rimesso sul trono e un campione, l’eroe Lugh, si presentò alla sua corte per guidare lo scontro contro i fomoriani.
In poco tempo Lugh impressionò tutti con la sua forza e la sua intelligenza e fu subito nominato condottiero degli eserciti dei De Dannan.
Iniziarono i preparativi per la grande battaglia.
Tra i De Dannan c’erano uomini con particolari abilità che promettevano di indebolire il nemico. Stregoni che avrebbero impaurito gli avversari, coppieri che promettevano di far loro patire la sete e druidi che programmavano di accecarli con piogge di fuoco.
Il fabbro dei De Dannan disse che avrebbe preparato armi nuovissime per sostituire quelle rotte e assicurò che le sue lance avrebbero sempre colpito il bersaglio.
Arrivò il giorno della grande battaglia. I due eserciti si affrontarono sui campi di Moytura.
Molti valorosi guerrieri morirono con i corpi deturpati dalle spade e dalle lance, il loro sangue inzuppò il terreno rendendolo scivoloso e tingendo di rosso l’acqua di un fiume nei dintorni.
Nel bel mezzo della battaglia Balor riuscì a uccidere il re Nuada e, usando il suo terribile occhio, si apprestava a uccidere Lugh, il campione comoriano.
L’occhio di Balor non veniva mai aperto tranne che in battaglia ed erano necessari quattro uomini per sollevare l’enorme palpebra.
Una volta aperto emanava una forza malefica in grado di uccidere o rendere impotenti coloro che finivano sotto il suo sguardo terrificante.
Quando Balor e Lugh si trovarono faccia a faccia, Balor ordinò di aprire l’occhio, ma non appena la palpebra fu sollevata Lugh, con la sua fionda lanciò una pietra e colpì l’occhio del gigante.
L’occhio e la pietra caddero sui fomoriani uccidendone a decine.
Fu il momento decisivo della battaglia.
I De Danann presero il sopravvento e i fomoriani furono costretti a fuggire per il mare.
