Via della Seta

Con questo termine, coniato nel XIX secolo, si usa indicare l’insieme di percorsi che dall’antichità, collegavano l’Estremo Oriente all’Europa passando attraverso l’Asia centrale e l’Asia Minore.

Proprio lungo questa via, si ebbero scambi commerciali che ebbero un’importanza fondamentale sulle influenze artistiche.

Le tappe principali dei viaggi erano: Antiochia, Samarcanda, Bactra, Babilonia, Seleucia, Palmira, Xi’an e Khotan.

Nel V secolo a.C. giunsero in Asia Centrale le prime sete cinesi e nei secoli successivi gli scambi con l’Estremo Oriente, si moltiplicarono. Percorsa inizialmente solo da mercanti, la via della seta fu usata in seguito anche da pellegrini e missionari.

Le merci erano trasportate via terra fino ai porti del Mediterraneo, per poi arrivare in tutta Europa. Oltre alle sete e altri tessuti, spezie, monete giada, coralli, gioielli, piatti e vasi di ceramica, statuette, vetri lavorati raggiungevano il vecchio continente.

Con le crociate giunsero dall’Oriente anche varie reliquie, che andarono ad arricchire i tesori della chiesa.

La via della seta fu percorsa fino al XVI secolo, Poi i viaggi degli esploratori permisero di individuare rotte marittime più rapide e meno pericolose, evitando in questo modo l’ostacolo delle catene montuose asiatiche.
