Era l’altisonante nome di Horo che il re Sethi I scelse al momento dell’incoronazione, quando nel 1290 a.C. ereditò l’impero da Ramses I.
Sethi I, aveva retto il paese insieme con il padre durante una coreggenza di poco meno di due anni,.
All’epoca della sua ascesa al trono era ormai un uomo maturo, nel pieno del vigore fisico. Sposato con la dama Tuya, figlia di un generale di carriera, e padre del futuro erede al trono, Ramses II
Il nuovo sovrano dimostrò di avere idee chiare e precise per quanto riguardava la sorte del suo popolo.
Sethi I sognava di riportare l’Egitto alla potenza e alla stabilità di un tempo, cancellando gli eventi legati al periodo amarniano.
La sua attenzione, infatti, fu rivolta alla ricerca di una strategia politica che non facesse precipitare nuovamente la monarchia nel baratro dell’egemonia religiosa, come si era verificata durante il regno di Akhenaton.
Per evitare che questo accadesse ancora, il re proseguì la politica di equilibrio del potere inaugurata dal padre Ramses I, continuando anche l’opera di restauro e di rifondazione dei templi e dello stato.
L’Egitto trovò così in Sethi I un sovrano determinato, con le idee ben chiare e che nutriva grandi propositi per il suo paese.
Analizzando i nomi che costituivano la titolatura reale del faraone si può cogliere il nuovo indirizzo politico.
Epiteti e titoli, infatti, esprimevano una sorta di sintesi programmatica, che andava dalla politica interna a quella estera, ma soprattutto equilibravano il potere di Amon con quello degli altri dei del pantheon egizio.
Il suo prenome Men-Maat-Ra, che significa “Che sia stabile la Maat di Ra“, era accompagnato dall’epiteto “Sovrano di Tebe” che veniva alternato a quello di “Sovrano di Heliopolis”.
Anche il nome Sethi che significa “Quello di Seth”, e che promuoveva il culto del dio Seth della città di Avaris – da cui probabilmente proveniva la famiglia del re – era accompagnato dall’appellativo “Amato da Ptah” che si alternava a quello di “Amato da Amon”.
Durante il regno di Ramses I il futuro faraone Sethi non solo era stato coreggente ma anche comandante in capo dell’esercito, incaricato della sicurezza dei confini.
E ancora una volta è proprio uno dei cinque nomi della titolatura reale, esattamente quello di nebty, a esprimere le intenzioni militari del faraone.
Sethi I infatti era “Quello della rinascita, il cui forte braccio respinge i Nove Archi”.
Anche il nome di “Horus d’oro” era significativo perché indicava che il re era “Quello dal sorgere radioso, i cui archi vincono tutti i paesi”.
Con il termine “Nove Archi” gli Egizi indicavano i nemici tradizionali dell’impero:
i Nubiani, i Libici, gli Asiatici, gli Hittiti e la popolazione di Mitanni.
Tra i nemici storici dei faraoni comparvero anche i Tjehenu, una tribù libica del Deserto Occidentale e gli Erkheye.
Lo stesso dio guerriero Amon veniva spesso rappresentato nell’atto di calpestare i “Nove Archi”
L’arco, inoltre, era il simbolo per eccellenza dei guerriero ,,,
.. con le frecce, non solo era stato una delle prime armi, ma presto era divenuto attributo divino e simbolo di guerra e allo stesso tempo il geroglifico con cui si scriveva la parola “stirpe” (in egizio “pedhu”).
Se il re non ebbe nel corso dei suoi anni di regno l’occasione per sottomettere nel vero senso della parola i “Nove Archi”, si dedicò a frenare le genti straniere che si ribellarono al suo potere o che minacciavano di farlo.
Il primo popolo ad assaggiare le sue doti guerriere fu quello della Nubia, dove Sethi I guidò personalmente l’esercito contro l’Irem.
Una località dell’Alta Nubia che secondo alcuni storici corrisponderebbe all’antica Yam (la regione di Kerma o dell’area di Dongola) mentre per altri, invece, si troverebbe nell’odierna regione fra l’Eritrea e l’Etiopia.
Le genti di questa parte di Nubia si ribellarono al potere egizio e Sethi I rispose agli insorti sferrando un attacco nell’ottavo anno di regno.
La vittoria delle truppe del faraone consolidò il controllo del territorio da parte degli Egizi.
Deposte le armi, Sethi I fece impugnare ai suoi sudditi gli strumenti per realizzare imponenti edifici, capaci di dimostrare ancora una volta la potenza della corona.
Tra le opere architettoniche realizzate in Nubia sorsero in questo periodo la sala ipostila all’interno del tempio di Napata e diversi monumenti a Buhen, Aksha, Kuban e Philae.
Ma fu l’Asia a preoccupare il sovrano.
Infatti i soldati egizi dovettero sostenere ben quattro campagne militari, immortalate successivamente sulla parete esterna del muro nord della grande sala a colonne di Karnak, costruita da Sethi I nella sua parte nord. Il figlio Ramses II la porterà a termine costruendo la parte sud.
Era necessario che il faraone rafforzasse i confini dell’impero e per questo, nei primi anni di regno, le truppe furono impegnate a contrastare eserciti stranieri, arrivando a spingersi fino oltre la città di Qadesh, in Siria.
In questo modo il re riprese il controllo dei territori del Levante, infondendo un certo timore negli Hittiti, il cui re Muwattalis non ritenne opportuno fermare l’avanzata del faraone, ma preferì firmare un trattato di pace aspettando un momento migliore per contrattaccare.
In Asia il re non si dedicò esclusivamente alla guerra.
Rilanciò l’economia, con grande vantaggio per il paese che poté contare sullo sfruttamento di nuove miniere, soprattutto nel Deserto Orientale, in aree come Wadi Miah, Wadi Abbad e Wadi Allaqi.
Qui il re facilitò il compito dei suoi uomini con lo scavo di nuovi pozzi d’acqua. Sethi I, sistemata la questione dei confini dell’impero, si dedicò anche alla realizzazione di grandi opere architettoniche.
Dopo aver fatto ricostruire il tempio di Heliopolis, diede ordine di iniziare la costruzione della grande sala ipostila di Karnak, ai lati del colonnato di Amenhotep III, e il suo tempio funerario di Qurnah, a Tebe Ovest.
Il faraone regalò all’Egitto uno dei monumenti più belli della storia, il grande tempio di Abydos, divenuto una delle mete preferite dai turisti grazie all’ottimo stato di conservazione di parte delle strutture architettoniche e dei rilievi parietali.
La costruzione di questo edificio sacro rientrava nella politica di equilibrio voluta dal re per evitare che il paese si trovasse nuovamente nelle mani del possente clero di Amon, pericoloso per la stabilità dell’impero.
Questo grande edificio infatti era dedicato alla triade di Abydos costituita da Osiride, Iside e Horus e alle principali divinità adorate nei tre maggiori centri politici dell’Egitto.
Questi dei erano Amon per la città di Tebe, Ptah per Menfi e Ra-Harakhti per Heliopolis.
Il tempio di Abydos presentava una struttura simile a quella dei templi classici ma moltiplicata per sette santuari, l’ultimo dei quali era dedicato al culto dello stesso Sethi divinizzato.
L’edificio presenta la “Tavola di Abydos” un importante strumento di conoscenza che ha consentito agli studiosi di ricostruire la cronologia dei faraoni che si sono succeduti al trono.
Il prezioso documento storico si trova inciso in un rilievo in cui il re è stato immortalato a fianco del figlio, Ramesse II, mentre offre incenso ai 76 faraoni che regnarono sull’Egitto fin dall’inizio della sua storia, da Menes fino allo stesso Sethi.
In questa lista si nota l’assenza dei sovrani che scelsero Amarna come capitale e della regina Hatshepsut, forse considerata un’usurpatrice.
Anche il cenotafio di Sethi I ha un importante significato per il messaggio simbolico e religioso legato alla sua costruzione.
Questo monumento si chiama Osireion e presenta un carattere simbolicamente cosmologico perché il faraone voleva che rappresentasse il tumulo primordiale da cui nacque il mondo.
L’Osireion presenta una struttura sotterranea sulla cui sommità si trovano enormi pilastri monoliticí in granito rosa che racchiudono all’interno una sala circondata d’acqua, che ricordava quella primordiale che lambiva il tumulo da cui tutto ebbe origine.
Tramite questo monumento Sethi I si collegava a Osiride, perché sulla collina sacra probabilmente i sudditi del re coltivavano l’orzo, la cui crescita simboleggiava la resurrezione del dio (ucciso dal fratello) nell’aldilà.
L’Osireion comprendeva anche una sala a forma di sarcofago e un soffitto astronomico con la dea Nut e testi incisi sulle pareti che presentavano le istruzioni per la costruzione di un orologio solare.
Nell’odierna Tell el Daba, dove sorgeva l’antica città di Avaris, Sethi I fece costruire un palazzo d’estate, celebre per la sua fabbrica di piastrelle policrome.
Inoltre il re scelse come residenza reale la città di Menfi, rinforzando così i rapporti con la zona del Delta di cui era originario.
Alla sua morte, grazie alla delicata politica di equilibri che non aveva privilegiato alcuna parte dell’Egitto rispetto alle altre,Sethi I poté consegnare al figlio Ramesse II un paese forte, prospero, privo di tensioni politiche e religiose.
