Gli Uomini del Bosco erano la personificazione della natura selvaggia prima della conquista della Terra da parte degli uomini civilizzati.

Ad essi appartenevano i satiri, i sileni e i fauni delle antiche saghe o divinità come il dio Pan.

Nella Bibbia i sa’irim (gli arruffati) vengono definiti “diavoli campestri”. Simili figure, metà umani e metà animali, appaiono nelle saghe indiane e nei racconti dell’Asia centrale.

Alcuni recenti studi li identificano come discendenti dell’ Homo Erectus o dell’uomo Neandertaliano.

Un’affascinante ipotesi secondo la quale si potrebbe riconosce in questi discendenti lo Yeti, Dremo, Mihgo, Almas e Almasti (Asia), e Sasquatch e Bigfoot (Nordamerica), Yum K’ax (America Centrale).

L’esoterismo attribuisce a queste creature un’esistenza tra l’iconografia occidentale e la realtà. Per gli studiosi delle religioni sono fantasie ataviche dell’uomo legate agli spiriti protettori dei boschi. Nel Medioevo gli Uomini del Bosco furono chiamati “Mostra et Portenta” e considerati il simboli di quegli uomini che con troppo facilità sono soddisfatti di se stessi e del proprio operato.
