Nella Bibbia i sa’irim (gli arruffati) vengono definiti “diavoli campestri”. Simili figure, metà umani e metà animali, appaiono nelle saghe indiane e nei racconti dell’Asia centrale.
Alcuni recenti studi li identificano come discendenti dell’ Homo Erectus o dell’uomo Neandertaliano.
