In epoca greca e romana portare un anello di ferro era un onore concesso soltanto ai cittadini benemeriti.
I sacerdoti di Giove, i cavalieri e i senatori portavano un anello d’oro.

Gli anelli avevano anche valenza magica come nel caso del leggendario anello con sigillo di Salomone.

Nella letteratura esoterica, a partire da Agrippa di Nettesheim (filosofo tedesco, alchimista, astrologo ed esoterista), spesso si possono trovare istruzioni per la fabbricazione di anelli forniti di poteri occulti.

Durante l’alto medioevo germanico, grande importanza veniva attribuita agli anelli-gioiello (anello del Nibelungo) perchè facilmente poteva esservi legata una benedizione o una maledizione.

Anelli con pietre preziose erano portati come amuleti contro le malattie.

Gli anelli spezzati simboleggiavano le promesse rotte, mentre la loro perdita annunciava una disgrazia.

In una parabola medioevale del “Gesta Romanorum” si narra di un re che aveva tre figli, uno era amato in modo particolare e a questi sarebbe toccato in eredità un anello con una gemma preziosa incastonata.

Il padre ne fece quindi fare due duplicati da lasciare agli altri figli.
Dopo la morte del re ognuno dei tre discendenti credeva di possedere l’anello con la pietra preziosa, così uno di loro disse:

”Vogliamo saggiare quale degli anelli è in grado di guarire dalle malattie e quindi è il più prezioso”.
Due anelli rimasero inefficaci, mentre quello del figlio prediletto rivelò virtù terapeutiche.

Il significato simbolico è così spiegato:

“I fratelli sono le tre “stirpi” dell’umanità.
La prima corrispondente al figlio prediletto è costituita da chi, grazie all’incarnazione di Cristo, è divenuto figlio di Dio, mentre le altre due sono rappresentate dagli ebrei e dai musulmani.

Chiaramente Dio ama maggiormente il popolo cristiano, questo è il motivo per cui gli ha lasciato in eredità l’anello che scaccia il demonio e opera i miracoli.

L'”anello piscatorio” portato dal Papa, rappresenta l’apostolo Pietro mentre pesca con la rete. Alla morte del pontefice l’anello viene distrutto, per il suo successore ne verrà forgiato uno nuovo
