Il 14 febbraio, giorno di San Valentino, Capone decide di chiudere la partita.
Il commando mafioso fu affidato agli ordini dell’autista e luogotenente di Capone, Sam Giancana, con al seguito altri quattro uomini.

Come data fu scelta il 14 febbraio, giorno nel quale Capone si trovava a Miami, convocato da un giudice federale per un interrogatorio.
Gli uomini di Capone si presentarono agli irlandesi travestiti da poliziotti, li disarmano e li portano in un garage al numero 21122 di North Clark Street.

Fatti voltare contro un muro furono uccisi a fucilate, ognuno dei sette morti fu ritrovato con almeno cinquanta proiettili in corpo.

Le vittime furono: Peter Gusenberg, Frank Gusenberg, Adam Heyer, Albert Kachellek, Reinhardt Schwimmer, Albert Weinshank e John May.

Bugs Moran fu il solo superstite, una vittima gli somigliava molto e probabilmente fu uccisa al suo posto, fuggì sparendo per sempre.

Frank Gusenberg era ancora vivo all’arrivo della polizia, ferito gravemente alla domanda chi gli avesse sparato rispose “Nessuno mi ha sparato” e tre ore dopo morì.

Per molti anni l’alibi di Al Capone resse, anche perché i pochi testimoni della scena videro dei poliziotti aggirarsi sul luogo della strage. La pista seguita fu a lungo quella di un’esecuzione da parte di poliziotti corrotti che volevano mettere a tacere dei testimoni che sapevano troppo.

Solo quarant’anni dopo un vecchio gangster, Alvin Karpis, fece luce sui fatti.
