Francis Drake

Molti conoscono Francis Drake per essere stato uno dei più grandi corsari della storia della pirateria.

In effetti egli deve soprattutto a questa attività se ancora oggi il suo nome viene ricordato come quello appartenuto ad uno dei più importanti personaggi dell’Inghilterra del XVI secolo.

Ma non fu solo pirata.

Fu anche un commerciante, un uomo politico, un ingegnere civile e, soprattutto, un esploratore. Anzi, i suoi successi come esploratore gli valsero, insieme a quelli ottenuti nella pirateria, la fama che tuttora gode.

La sua vita si può distinguere in tre fasi: la pirateria, la circumnavigazione terrestre e la guerra contro gli spagnoli.

Francis Drake nacque nel Devon intorno al 1540. Il luogo e la data non sono certi, e sembra che fosse imparentato, seppur lontanamente, con la locale famiglia nobile dei Drake.

All’età di 13 anni il piccolo Francis mise per la prima volta piede su una nave facendosi le ossa navigando nelle acque del Mare del Nord. A 23 anni fece il suo primo viaggio nel Nuovo Mondo.

Quello era un periodo contrassegnato da continui contrasti, più o meno accesi, tra le due maggiori potente di quegli anni: l’Inghilterra e la Spagna.

La Spagna era padrona di un immenso impero e tramite la sua potente flotta teneva sotto controllo gli oceani che considerava come suo dominio. La scoperta dell’America, avvenuta nel 1492, aveva assicurato alla Corona spagnola, oltre che immensi territori e ricchezze, l’esclusiva sui commerci con il Nuovo Mondo che, a tutti gli effetti, era considerato come parte dell’impero.

L’Inghilterra, dal canto suo, rivendicava il suo diritto di solcare liberamente qualsiasi mare e di poter liberamente commerciare con le sue colonie.

L’attrito tra i due paesi era evidente, accentuato ancora di più da motivi religiosi. La Spagna, da sempre fedele al Cattolicesimo non poteva non appoggiare le rivolte cattoliche che periodicamente scoppiavano in Inghilterra o in Irlanda

Ma torniamo a Francis Drake

Poco più ventenne, in compagnia di suo cugino Sir John Hawkins fece i primi commerci di schiavi con la Guinea. Intorno al 1560 Drake e Hawkins compirono varie spedizioni commerciali nel Nuovo Mondo.

A questi anni risalirono i primi contrasti con gli Spagnoli che non vedevano assolutamente di buon occhio i loro commerci clandestini con le colonie spagnole dei Carabi e del Centro America. Drake, d’altronde, aveva in antipatia i cattolici e quindi gli spagnoli.

Durante uno di questi viaggi i due inglesi vennero attaccati da una flotta spagnola che ebbe la meglio e solo due vascelli inglesi, con Hawkins e Drake, riuscirono fortunosamente a ritornare in Inghilterra.

Questo fatto fece aumentare la sua ostilità nei confronti degli spagnoli

In patria Drake chiese ad Elisabetta I un risarcimento che però gli fu negato. A seguito di questo rifiuto, decise quindi di intraprendere azioni di pirateria contro le colonie e i vascelli spagnoli.

Drake e i suoi uomini, per anni, imperversarono nei Carabi, attaccando le colonie spagnole e le imbarcazioni che incontravano.

Era una costante minaccia.

Le ricchezze che fornivano le colonie del Nuovo Mondo, erano immense. Navi piene di argento e oro salpavano con grande frequenza dalle colonie dirette in Europa. I metalli preziosi venivano estratti dalle montagne del Sud America e spediti nei centri di raccolta a Panama.

Da qui l’oro e l’argento venivano trasferiti in porti, situati più a nord, da dove una flotta li trasferiva in Madrepatria. Tutte queste immense ricchezze non potevano non attirare le mire di Francis Drake.

Nombre de Dios era uno di quei porti dove l’oro e l’argento, provenienti da Panama, venivano imbarcati per essere portati in Spagna. Per il trasferimento da Panama a Nombre di Dios, venivano utilizzate delle carovane costituite da muli e protette da soldati

Dopo un tentativo fallito, e con l’aiuto di ex schiavi scappati dai padroni spagnoli, Drake e i suoi uomini riuscirono a mettere le mani su uno di questi treni d’argento. Le ricchezze conquistate erano ingentissime a tal punto che non aveva abbastanza uomini per trasportare il bottino.

A seguito di questo successo Francis Drake, con i suoi 30 uomini, fece ritorno in Inghilterra e donò alla Corona metà del bottino, Gli uomini tornarono in Patria molto più ricchi di quando erano partiti.

Elisabetta I che aveva incoraggiato le imprese di Drake, avendo da poco siglato una tregua con il re Filippo II, era impossibilitata però a concedergli un riconoscimento ufficiale.

Era il 1573.

Quattro anni più tardi ricevette dalla Regina il compito di attaccare le colonie spagnole sulla costa americana del Pacifico.

Drake salpò quindi con 150 uomini e 5 navi e cominciò l’avventura che lo avrebbe portato ad essere il primo inglese a circumnavigare la Terra.

Inizialmente si diresse a sud da dove, all’altezza dell’isola di Capo Verde, attraversò l’Atlantico per arrivare sulle coste del Brasile. Piegò poi verso sud, attraversò lo Stretto di Magellano e, finalmente, entrò nell’Oceano Pacifico.

Nel frattempo le cose non gli stavano andando molto bene in quanto perse quattro delle cinque navi che facevano parte della sua flotta. Alcune affondarono e altre riuscirono a tornare, in misero stato, in Inghilterra.

Con una sola nave, rinominata Golden Hind, cominciò la risalita verso nord. Catturò navi spagnole e assalì le città di Lima, Valpariso e Arica.

li spagnoli non si aspettavano una azione così temeraria, quindi molte città erano indifese.

Francis Drake ritenne pericoloso tornare per lo Stretto di Magellano e quindi continuò il suo viaggio verso nord con la speranza di trovare il mitico passaggio a Nord Ovest che lo avrebbe riportato nell’Oceano Atlantico.

Fallì nel suo tentativo, anche se gli storici dubitano che possa essersi spinto così a nord, e decise di toccare terra e di fondare una colonia nel nome della Corona inglese.

La chiamò Nuova Albione.

La localizzazione di questo porto rimane tuttora un mistero, anche se si ritiene che si trovasse in un punto tra l’attuale San Francisco, l’Oregon e lo stato di Washington. Qualsiasi sia stata la localizzazione, era la prima colonia inglese nel Nuovo Mondo.

A Francis Drake non rimase come soluzione, per tornare a casa, che puntare verso ovest e attraversare il Pacifico.

Il viaggio naturalmente fu lungo e toccò l’arcipelago indonesiano, l’isola di Java e delle Molucche. Durante il tragitto entrò in contatto con le popolazioni locali, strinse accordi commerciali e fece provvista di spezie e altri prodotti esotici

L’esatto tragitto della Golden Hind resta ancora un mistero anche se non è difficile credere che sia entrato in Atlantico, passando per Capo di Buona Speranza. Una volta entrato in Atlantico, girò la prua verso nord e arrivò in Inghilterra nel Settembre del 1580, dopo quasi 3 anni dalla partenza e dopo aver percorso circa 36.000 miglia.

Gli spagnoli chiesero ad Elisabetta I di trattarlo come un fuorilegge.

La Regina, invece, accolse Drake e i suoi uomini con grandi onori e, addirittura, nominò Drake cavaliere conferendogli così la possibilità di sedere in parlamento.

Divenne così Sir Francis Drake.

L’avventura di Drake aveva altresì dimostrato la vulnerabilità dell’impero spagnolo e della sua flotta che non era riuscita ad avere la meglio di quell’unica nave che, guidata da uno dei migliori marinai che l’Inghilterra abbia mai avuto, attaccò colonie e catturò vascelli spagnoli senza poter essere fermata.

Nel 1582 Sir Francis Drake divenne sindaco di Plymouth e, anche se non ufficialmente, consigliere del governo per gli affari navali. Tre anni più tardi scoppiò la guerra aperta tra Spagna ed Inghilterra. Drake fece altri viaggi nel Nuovo Mondo attaccando colonie spagnole come San Augustin in Florida, Carthagena e Santo Domingo.

La Spagna mostrava chiaramente l’intenzione di invadere il suolo inglese. Il governo allora chiese a Drake di attaccare direttamente i porti spagnoli al fine di affondare il maggior numero di imbarcazioni. Famosa fu la presa della città di Cadice dove riuscì ad affondare 31 navi nemiche.

Questo fatto riuscì a far ritardare l’invasione di almeno un anno.

Comunque Filippo II era deciso a compiere l’impresa e il piano prevedeva l’invio di una imponente flotta a Dunkirk (Dunkerque) per permettere all’esercito guidato da Alessandro Farnese, Duca di Parma, che avrebbe dovuto compiere l’invasione, di attraversare il Canale della Manica.

L’Armada, composta da 130 vascelli, era guidata da Alonso de Guzman El Bueno

Dall’altra parte la flotta inglese, meno numerosa, era, nominalmente, guidata da Lord Howard di Effingham, ma il vero comando era esercitato dal Vice Ammiraglio Sir Francis Drake.

Francis Drake ebbe un ruolo fondamentale nell’evitare al suo paese una invasione da parte degli spagnoli.

La battaglia di Gravelines permise agli inglesi di salvare il loro paese e di infliggere un duro colpo alla Invincibile Armada

Dopo aver contribuito a salvare il suo paese dall’invasione spagnola, la stella di Sir Francis Drake cominciò la sua fase calante.

In compagnia di Sir John Hawkins riprese le scorrerie nei Carabi, ma la fortuna ormai gli aveva voltato le spalle. Gli insuccessi si susseguirono e, nella loro ultima spedizione, nel 1596, trovarono la morte. Hawkins morì a Puerto Rico mente Drake morì di dissenteria di fronte a Puerto Bello. Entrambi furono sepolti in mare

Qui termina l’avventura di uno dei più famosi uomini di mare di tutti i tempi.

Un pirata, ma anche un grande esploratore e un accorto uomo politico e militare. La stampa patriottica inglese, negli anni e nei decenni successivi, spesso farà ricorso alla sua figura di salvatore della Patria.

Una leggenda narra che ogni volta che l’Inghilterra sarà in pericolo, se si suona il tamburo di Sir Francis Drake, egli tornerà per salvare il paese.
