Ezzelino III

Alla fine del XII secolo, iniziò la storia della famiglia Ezzelino.

Nella Marca Trevigiana, che corrispondeva all’attuale regione Veneto, il potere era diviso fra vari comuni i più ricchi e potenti: Padova, Verona, Mantova, Treviso e Vicenza. La Repubblica di Venezia era più interessata alle colonie d’oltremare e alla protezione delle sue vie commerciali.

Tra le famiglie dell’epoca, operanti in questa zona, si segnalavano: gli Este, i San Bonifacio, i Camposampiero, i Da Camino, i Salinguerra e, naturalmente, gli Ezzelino.

Gli altri due grandi protagonisti, attori di primo piano nelle vicende di Ezzelino III erano: l’Imperatore di Germania Federico II di Svevia e il Papa.

Ricordiamo inoltre che quelli erano tempi di forti contrasti tra l’Imperatore e il Papa.

I sostenitori della causa imperiale (ghibellini) e i sostenitori del papato (guelfi) spesso davano luogo a veri e propri scontri armati.

La famiglia Ezzelino era di origine tedesca e giunse in Italia tra il X e XI secolo. Si stabilì a Romano, un paese nelle vicinanze di Bassano del Grappa, che in epoca più recente prese il nome di Romano d’Ezzelino.

Ezzelino II, a seguito dei servigi compiuti presso l’Imperatore Ottone IV, ottenne la città di Bassano da dove cominciò ad estendere i suoi domini nella regione. Ormai vecchio si ritirò in convento e per questo motivo ricevette il soprannome de “Il Monaco”. Divise i suoi beni tra i due figli. Alberico che ricevette i possedimenti nel bassanese e nel vicentino ed Ezzelino III che ereditò le proprietà nel trevigiano, feltrino, bellunese e in Friuli.

Tra il 1220 e 1230 i due fratelli parteciparono a piccole guerre tra i vari comuni facendo e disfacendo alleanze cercando di ottenere privilegi, ricchezze ed onori. Si allearono un anno con un comune e l’anno successivo con un altro comune.

A quel tempo le guerre fra i comuni non erano combattute tanto per motivi ideologici, ma piuttosto per il controllo di castelli, abbazie, vie di comunicazione.

Famiglie entravano in conflitto con altre famiglie per poter aver il privilegio di vedere un proprio rappresentante, o alleato, eletto podestà di qualche comune o nominato vescovo o priore di qualche abbazia. Erano anche tempi di accordi nascosti, di avvelenamenti, di torture, di alleanze sancite con matrimoni di convenienza.

Questo era l’ambiente in cui i due fratelli Ezzelino mossero i primi passi della loro carriera politico-militare.

Quindi nella prima metà del XII secolo vediamo Ezzelino allearsi con questa o con quella famiglia con l’intento di accrescere i suoi possedimenti e il suo potere. Nel 1230 riuscì a far eleggere un suo cognato a podestà di Verona e la cosa scatenò una guerra tra i Montecchi, i Salinguerra ed Ezzelino contro i San Bonifacio appoggiati da Padova, Vicenza e Mantova.

Ezzelino vinse.

La sua ambizione ormai cominciava a preoccupare le grandi forze presenti nella regione e una di queste in particolare: la Lega Lombarda.
A metà del XII secolo, per contrastare le mire imperiali sul nord Italia, molti comuni, principalmente della Lombardia, con il famoso “giuramento di Pontida” si unirono in una lega.

La guerra tra l’imperatore e la lega durò molti anni, con esito incerto. Celeberrima è la battaglia di Legnano, a cui partecipò anche Ezzelino I, in cui la lega sconfisse l’esercito di Federico I Barbarossa, ma questa è un’altra storia.

La potente lega lombarda riuscì momentaneamente a porre freno all’espansione di Ezzelino III che, a questo punto, chiese aiuto all’Imperatore di Germania Federico II.

E’ da questo momento che Ezzelino si legò, in modo indissolubile, alla figura dell’Imperatore.

L’alleanza faceva comodo a tutte e due. All’Imperatore permetteva di avere una via di comunicazione protetta tra la Germania e la pianura Padana, ad Ezzelino, invece, faceva molto comodo avere un alleato così potente.

L’alleanza permise ad Ezzelino di fare un salto di qualità, nello scacchiere del nord est, e i due conquistarono subito Peschiera e Vicenza. Nel Febbraio del 1237 Ezzelino conquistò la potente città di Padova e, il mese successivo, anche Treviso venne occupata.

I successi terminarono a Montagnana che riuscì a respingere l’esercito formato da tedeschi, bassanesi e padovani.

E’ in questo periodo che nacque la triste fama circa la ferocia di Ezzelino.

Il suo governo nelle varie città era contraddistinto da una triste serie di arresti, esili, sequestri di beni e demolizioni di palazzi appartenenti a chi era sospettato di non essergli favorevole. Per fermare questa violenza i comuni si appellarono all’Imperatore Federico II, di sicuro più conciliante e moderato del suo alleato, che fu quindi costretto a scendere in Italia per calmare Ezzelino.

Ma era quando l’Imperatore doveva tornare in Germania che Ezzelino scatenava la sua ferocia repressiva.

Nel 1237 un’altra serie di guerre vittoriose portò alla nomina di Ezzelino a Vicario Imperiale della Marca Trevigiana alla quale l’Imperatore aggiunse il Trentino. Oltretutto, con il permesso imperiale, sposò la figlia dei Federico II, rinsaldando ancora di più il legame tra i due personaggi.

L’anno seguente Azzo d’Este, alleato del Papa, cercò inutilmente di conquistare Padova mentre Alberico, il fratello di Ezzelino, passò in campo guelfo conquistando Treviso.

Ezzelino III cercò di estendere il suo dominio anche sul Friuli, ma dopo una prima alleanza con il duca di Gorizia Mainardo III, dovette rinunciarvi anche per la presenza del forte esercito del patriarca Bertoldo. Nel 1250 morì Federico II e l’Impero cadde in un periodo di incertezze, nonostante ciò Ezzelino III rimase fedele all’alleanza con l’Imperatore.

Il papa Alessandro IV, preoccupato per la potenza di Ezzelino, cominciò a fare progetti per cercare di porre termine al potere del tiranno. Per questo motivo, e per altri motivi meno nobili, indisse, nel 1254 una crociata a cui tutti i credenti erano tenuti a partecipare. Ezzelino, intanto, continuava la sua politica fatta di esecuzioni e di torture contro chiunque cercasse di ostacolare i suoi progetti o anche contro chi era ritenuto colpevole solo di aver ascoltato una canzone offensiva verso il tiranno.

Il legato papale Filippo Fontana, arcivescovo di Ravenna, riuscì a mettere insieme un folto esercito. Era composto da bolognesi, romagnoli, ferraresi, ma anche avventurieri, frati, sacerdoti ed esiliati di Padova e Verona guidati dai Camposampiero e dai San Bonifacio. Alla crociata aderì anche Venezia. Questo variegato esercito mosse verso Padova considerata la città più importante fra quelle controllate da Ezzelino.

La difesa della città era guidata dal nipote di Ezzelino che però non si dimostrò all’altezza di suo zio.

Dopo una breve resistenza i crociati entrarono in città attraverso il ponte Altinate. Ancora oggi è possibile vedere, alla fine dell’omonima via una lapide che ricorda l’evento che per i padovani significava la liberazione dal feroce tiranno. Era il 20 Giugno dell’anno 1256.

La caduta di Padova sembrava l’inizio della fine per Ezzelino.

Dalla parte dei crociati passarono: Mestre, Treviso, Este e Montagnana. Molti veneziani, chioggiotti e padovani si unirono all’esercito papista. Dopo un tentativo fallito di conquistare Vicenza i crociati prepararono la difesa di Padova che riuscirono a mantenere nonostante i ripetuti attacchi di Ezzelino. Altre città passarono dalla parte del Papa: Monselice, Brescia, Mantova, Pavia e Piacenza.

Nonostante questo però la crociata perse di slancio e di entusiasmo; fu costretta a continui, inutili e sanguinosi, piccoli scontri.

La situazione si trascinò fino al 1258 quando Brescia chiamò in aiuto le forze crociate che intervennero e lo scontro con Ezzelino divenne così inevitabile. Fu una grave sconfitta per i papisti; la cavalleria tedesca di Ezzelino travolse facilmente l’esercito nemico ponendo così fine alla crociata stessa.

Battuti i crociati, Ezzelino ancora affamato di potere, volse lo sguardo ad ovest, verso la Lombardia, addirittura verso Milano, preda troppo grande per un personaggio, seppur potente, come Ezzelino. Dopo aver ripreso Brescia e altri paesi della Lombardia, si presentò alle porte di Milano con il chiaro intento di conquistarla. Per fronteggiare la minaccia nacque un’alleanza che andava dal Papa ad Azzo d’Este, da Manfredi Re di Sicilia ai San Bonifacio, dai Pallavicino alle città di Padova, Mantova e Ferrara.

Dopo qualche successo iniziale Ezzelino fallì la conquista di Monza. Braccato dall’esercito nemico, per lui ormai i giorni erano contati. Milano era troppo ben difesa e si trovò a dover combattere contro un esercito molto più numeroso di quello suo.

Il 16 Settembre a Cassano fu ferito da una freccia.

Sulle sue truppe ormai demoralizzate e stanche si rovesciò l’esercito fresco di Azzo VII d’Este. Ezzelino, di nuovo ferito, fu catturato e condotto al castello di Soncino dove morì per le ferite riportate. Era il 27 Settembre 1259. Il fratello Alarico, da tempo riappacificatosi con il fratello, mantenne il suo dominio ancora per un anno. Alla fine anche lui venne catturato e ucciso il 26 Settembre 1260 insieme alla moglie e ai suoi sette figli.

La figura di Ezzelino III da Romano, nonostante il suo carattere feroce e sanguinario, ha colpito molto gli storici e i poeti.

Dante lo inserisce nel XII canto dell’Inferno. Le leggende popolari lo raffiguravano come l’Anticristo anche a causa della madre che si riteneva fosse una strega.

Era figlio del suo tempo; un’epoca sanguinaria e violenta, ma, nonostante questo, passò alla storia per ferocia e sadismo disumani.
