TRE SCOMUNICHE PER UN GRANDIOSO PROGETTO

Federico II

Per papa Innocenzo III l’ascesa all’impero di Federico II (1214) era sembrata una grande vittoria, ma apparve subito chiaro, con la morte del Papa (1216) che Federico non avrebbe mantenuto le sue promesse.

Anzi riprese il progetto di suo padre e di suo nonno (Barbarossa) di fare dell’impero la suprema autorità universale.

Il nuovo pontefice Onorio III accettò l’unione della Sicilia e dell’impero e incoronò nel 1220 Federico imperatore. Pretese però in cambio che egli si impegnasse immediatamente in una nuova crociata.

Gli anni passavano e l’imperatore rimandava sempre la partenza per la Terrasanta, che avvenne solo nel 1227, dopo la scomunica del nuovo papa Gregorio IX.

Tuttavia, invece di combattere raggiunse nel 1229 un accordo con il sultano d’Egitto che si impegnò a restituire Gerusalemme ai cristiani.

Anche se tutto si era svolto senza spargimento di sangue, l’idea che un imperatore cristiano potesse trattare con i musulmani apparve un tradimento sia al papa che agli uomini dell’epoca.

Federico venne così colpito da una nuova scomunica.

L’imperatore rientrato in Italia, sconfisse l’esercito pontificio, che aveva invaso i suoi territori e con la Pace di San Germano, nel 1230, ottenne la revoca della scomunica.

Tutto ciò consentì a Federico II di riprendere il progetto imperiale della dinastia di Svevia.

Per il progetto di Federico, era di enorme importanza la Sicilia, per questo si impegnò a costruire nell’isola un nuovo Stato, forte e in grado di superare le divisioni feudali.

Nel 1231, a Melfi, vennero scritte le Costituzioni melfitane, dove veniva vietato ogni forma di potere autonomo e si riconosceva solo al sovrano, oppure a funzionari da lui nominati, i compiti di governo.

La capitale dello Stato, Palermo, venne arricchita da palazzi e monumenti, inoltre Federico II accolse nella propria corte arti e letterati di ogni provenienza.

Sottomessa così la Sicilia non rimaneva altro a Federico che tentare di imporre la sua autorità sui Comuni dando vita così ad un vero e proprio regno d’Italia.

Con la sua politica Federico II si attirò l’ostilità dei nobili, del papato e dei Comuni.

Ovviamente un’impresa così ambiziosa necessitava di un grande dispendio di denaro che l’imperatore incassava con una notevole pressione fiscale sia sui generi di prima necessità, sia sulle attività produttive.

Lo scontro fu iniziato dal figlio di Federico, Enrico VII, a cui l’imperatore aveva affidato la Germania.

Enrico, con l’appoggio dei Comuni nel 1234 si ribellò al padre, ma fu sconfitto nel 1235 e Federico imprigionò il figlio in un castello pugliese, dove qualche anno più tardi si sarebbe suicidato.

Più complesso fu lo scontro con i Comuni e con il papa che nuovamente lo scomunicò. Federico II ottenne un’importante vittoria nel 1237 a Cortenuova, in seguito fu ripetutamente sconfitto.

La sua morte avvenuta nel 1250 pose fine al conflitto e ai sogni di un impero universale.
