Andromeda - Mitologia Greca

Andromeda era figlia di Cefeo re di Ioppa in Palestina (dalla maggior parte delle fonti viene identifica con l’Etiopia) e di Cassiopea.

Cassiopea asseriva che sua figlia fosse più bella delle Nereidi, queste, offese, si lamentarono con Poseidone che inviò un mostruoso serpente marino a devastare il paese.

Ammone, l’oracolo di Zeus, chiese che Andromeda fosse data in pasto al serpente.

La giovane fu incatenata ad un masso ai piedi di un faraglione in attesa dell’orribile fine. Quando il serpente le si avvicinò per divorarla, giunse Perseo con un sacco che conteneva la testa della Medusa.

Perseo aveva previsto quanto sarebbe successo e aveva chiesto la mano di Andromeda a Cefeo, qualora fosse riuscito ad uccidere il mostro. Brandendo la testa della Medusa davanti al serpente lo trasformò in un masso.

Cefeo, quindi, diede una grande festa per il matrimonio della figlia, senza confessare però un piccolo particolare.

Andromeda era già stata promessa a suo zio Fineo, il quale, alla testa di un gran numero di uomini armati, interruppe la festa e tentò di rapire la fanciulla.

Ancora una volta intervenne Perseo che si sbarazzò degli intrusi usando la testa della Medusa per trasformarli in pietre.

Per qualche tempo i due sposi vissero alla corte di Cefeo, ma quando nacque il loro primo figlio Perse, Perseo rinunciò ai suoi diritti al trono e ritornò con Andromeda nell’isola di Serito.

Perso divenne poi re dell’Argolide ed ebbe numerosi figli da Andromeda: Alceo, Steselo, Eleio, Mestore, Elettrone, e una figlia, Gorgofone.

Restarono uniti fino alla morte.

Quando questa giunse, Andromeda, suo marito, i parenti e il serpente di mare furono assunti in cielo sotto forma di costellazione.

Cassiopea, per il suo errore, fu messa a testa in giù.
