Serpente
In molte culture arcaiche il serpente simboleggia il mondo infernale e il regno dei morti.

Ciò deriva probabilmente dalla sua abitudine di vivere in buche della terra e forse anche per la sua apparente capacità di ringiovanire grazie alla muta.

Collegando le idee di vita e di morte, il valore simbolico di questo animale è importantissimo, infatti non esiste cultura che abbia ignorato il serpente.

Nella Bibbia incarna sia il nemico tentatore nel Paradiso sia il salvatore, come si legge nel racconto del “serpente di bronzo” che Mosè piantò nel deserto.

Nella mitologia nordica, il serpente Midgard, che con le sue spire cinge la terra, è il simbolo dell’Oceano che circonda la terra.

Nell’antico Egitto Apophis minacciava la barca del dio Ra cercando di impedirgli di sorgere.

Inoltre l’ureo, ossia il cobra in posizione d’attacco si trovava sulla corona del faraone e sputava veleno contro i suoi nemici.

Nel Physiologus troviamo un curioso simbolismo.

In un primo momento il testo si occupa del ringiovanimento del serpente durante la muta. Ciò equivale all’uomo che deve togliersi la vecchiaia del mondo e, ringiovanito, aspirare alla vita eterna.

Poi racconta che il serpente prima di bere alla sorgente lascia il veleno nella sua tana allo scopo di mantenere l’acqua pura;.

Quindi l’uomo per giungere alla vita eterna deve liberarsi del veleno dei suoi peccati.

Inoltre vi si trova scritto, che il serpente morde solo le persone vestite e rifugge dalle nudità, per questo motivo l’uomo deve deporre la “foglia di fico della concupiscenza” e presentarsi nudo dinanzi al peccato, in modo che il maligno non lo possa attaccare.

Particolarmente denso di simbologia è il serpente che si morde la coda, in greco Uroboros, che nella sua forma circolare simboleggia l’eternità.

Nell’iconografia alchemica simboleggia il procedere circolare di alcuni processi per esempio evaporazione, condensazione e nuovamente evaporazione.

Nelle concezioni mitologiche antiche vi è una funzione positiva del serpente essendo esso in relazione con la terra. Può rappresentare la benedizione delle anime degli antenati oppure la fede nella guarigione come nella verga di Esculapio.

Nei sistemi esoterici di origine asiatica, il serpente Kundalini, avvinto alla base della colonna vertebrale, è il simbolo dell’energia vitale che bisogna risvegliare con la meditazione.

Nell’antico simbolismo indiano spiccano i nagas, creature semidivine che custodiscono i tesori della terra. Spesso le statue rappresentano questi demoni benevoli e di buon auspico sotto le sembianze di esseri umani con un corpo di serpente messi a sorvegliare la porta dei templi.

Sul serpente del mondo è adagiato il dio Vishnu; dei e titani avvolsero intorno alla montagna del mondo (Meru) il corpo del serpente Vasuki e solo così poterono montare il primordiale mare di latte tramutandolo in burro.

In Cina il serpente è il quinto segno dello zodiaco ed è ritenuto molto astuto e pericoloso.

Nei sogni si attribuisce un significato sessuale, infatti, il corpo del serpente è associato al pene e la sua testa triangolare al pube femminile.

Il serpente svolge una funzione importante nello Scintoismo giapponese un mito basato sulla testa dell’animale che ricorda la leggenda greca di Ercole che lotta contro l’Idra dalle nove teste.

Secondo questo mito giapponese, il dio delle tempeste Susanoo avrebbe ucciso il boa dalle otto teste Yamata-no-orochi con la spada sacra che trovò nella coda del boa liberando così la principessa Inada-hi-me che infine sposò.

Nella scultura medievale una donna nuda con due serpenti al seno raffigura la nutrice dei vizi della lussuria e della voluttà, mentre l’espressione “allevarsi delle serpi in seno, esprime l’involontario incoraggiamento di persone infide.
