Secondo il credo popolare i capelli racchiudono la forza vitale, come narrato nelle gesta dell’eroe biblico Sansone.

I penitenti e i profeti, che vivevano al di fuori della civiltà, si lasciavano crescere i capelli: ne sono un esempio Giovanni Battista e i monaci egiziani del deserto. Nei penitenti, come Maria l’Egiziana, i capelli lunghi che avvolgevano il corpo indicavano una vita isolata dal mondo. Il corpo era così ricoperto pur rinunciando agli indumenti.

Nelle culture primitive particolari acconciature simboleggiavano uno stato sociale o una carica.

Spesso ai bambini venivano tagliati i capelli nel momento in cui abbandonavano lo stadio infantile, oppure veniva lasciata una ciocca fino alla pubertà (Horus-bambino nell’Antico Egitto).

Per i popoli nordici i capelli lunghi rappresentavano i nati liberi, infatti gli schiavi o i condannati venivano rasati. Nel medioevo, invece, i capelli lunghi erano simbolo della lussuria delle sirene e del ribelle Assalonne, che a causa della lunga capigliatura rimase impigliato ad un albero e fu ucciso.

L’uso di portare in un medaglione alcune ciocche di capelli della persona amata era diffuso nel XIX secolo.

Gli esseri soprannaturali e i demoni sono spesso rappresentati con i serpenti al posto dei capelli come le Furie, il dio etrusco Charun e Medusa. Il colore rosso è da considerarsi “diabolico”. Nei riti magici si usa fare un nodo con i capelli della persona alla quale si vuole infondere amore.

La forma dei capelli suggerisce una relazione con il mondo delle immagini mentali.

I capelli ricci sono associati ad un carattere vitale, ma contorto e difficile da dipanare, quelli ondulati riportano ad un pensiero che si articola in maniera flessibile. Quelli lisci una linearità che può caratterizzare anche i contenuti mentali. Il legame capelli-pensieri viene suggerito anche dall’incanutimento precoce che a volte segue una situazione particolarmente difficile.

La loro caduta è legata al ciclo stagionale e richiama la perdita di forze, di interessi, di cose lasciate dietro di sé.
