CONQUISTA DI GERUSALEMME

CROCIATE

Ci sono tre motivi per cui fu indotta la prima Crociata:
la richiesta dell’impero bizantino minacciato da Turchi,
la necessità di mantenere aperte le vie di traffico con l’Oriente,
liberare Gerusalemme, sede del sepolcro di Cristo, occupata dai Musulmani.

Una guerra di religione benedetta dal Papa, a cui inizialmente aderiscono masse disordinate di volontari. Solo nel 1097 si avrà un vero corpo di spedizione al comando di Goffredo di Buglione.

I crociati raggiungono Gerusalemme, dopo alcune conquiste tra Libano e Siria, solo nel giugno 1099.

Si accampano su un terreno arido e soleggiato. I pochi pozzi d’acqua sono stati avvelenati dai difensori e non c’è legname per costruire macchine d’assalto. I primi tentativi di attacco alla città, con le sole armi individuali, vengono respinti facilmente dagli assediati, finché non sbarcarono a Giaffa i fratelli Embriaco.

Questi erano due costruttori genovesi di macchine da lancio e dopo aver demolito le navi che li avevano trasportati usarono il legname per costruire torri d’assedio e macchine da lancio.

I Musulmani, preoccupati dall’uso delle macchine da guerra dei crociati, tentarono diverse incursioni per impedirne la costruzione, ma fu tutto vano.

Dalla metà di luglio i crociati iniziano a martellare le mura della Città Santa con pietre, materiale incendiario e frecce, mentre torri e gatti (robuste capanne su ruote, dentro le quali i fanti avanzavano protetti) vengono fatti scorrere sul fossato.

L’attacco viene sferrato presso la Porta di Monte Sione e la Porta di Santa Maria, gli Arabi sono sopraffatti dal nemico che dilaga in città.

Nonostante gli ordini di molti capi cristiani a limitarsi alla sola conquista della città, i crociati si macchiarono di gravi crimini contro Arabi, Ebrei e appartenenti ad altre confessioni.

Quasi tutti gli abitanti di Gerusalemme furono uccisi nel corso di quella giornata, Il bilancio varia a seconda delle fonti: per i cristiani 10 000 morti, per i musulmani, 70 000.

Si legge nelle “Gesta Francorum”

“Quando i pagani furono sopraffatti, i nostri uomini fecero un gran numero di prigionieri, uomini, donne e perfino bambini, che uccisero o tennero in cattività, secondo i loro desideri.”

Più avanti è scritto:
“[I nostri capi] inoltre ordinarono che tutti i morti Saraceni fossero gettati fuori a causa del terribile fetore, poiché l’intera città era piena dei loro corpi. I saraceni sopravvissuti trascinarono i morti davanti alle porte e li sistemarono in mucchi che sembravano case. Nessuno aveva mai visto o sentito di un tale massacro di pagani. Furono innalzate pire funerarie simili a piramidi, e solo Dio conosce il loro numero. Ma Raimondo fece in modo che l’Emiro e quelli che erano con lui fossero condotti sani e salvi ad Ascalona.”.

Gerusalemme rimase cristiana fino al 1187, quando venne riconquistata dal sultano curdo Saladino.
