In Inghilterra l’XI secolo si potrebbe facilmente descrivere come “era scandinava”a causa della ripresa delle scorribande vichinghe che già avevano afflitto il regno di Re Alfredo il grande (871 – 899).

Che cosa fece Alfredo per meritarsi il titolo di “grande”?

Riformò totalmente le forze militari e navali del suo regno (Wessex) e le trasformò in una micidiale macchina da guerra per le battaglie che portarono a creare il Regno d’Inghilterra. Alfredo sviluppò un sistema di fortificazioni dette burh (distretto). Questo gli permise di difendere i suoi territori e ai suoi successori di espandersi nel Danelaw, un’area dell’Inghilterra sotto il controllo amministrativo dei Vichinghi a partire dalla fine del IX secolo.

L’ultimo sovrano vichingo indipendente, Erik il sanguinario, re di York, fu ucciso nel 955, dopodiché ci fu quasi mezzo secolo di pace in Inghilterra.

Furono la ricchezza e il successo del regno di Edgardo (959-975) ed Etelredo II (che salì al trono nel 978, dopo la morte di suo fratello in circostanze sospette) a rendere l’Inghilterra un obiettivo per i predoni.

Circa nel 991, un gruppo di vichinghi sconfisse il prefetto Byrtnoth (che morì l’11 agosto 991 nella battaglia di Maldon) e l’esercito dell’Anglia Orientale a Maldon, in Essex.

Per persuaderli ad allontanarsi fu pagato un tributo di 10.000 sterline.

Nonostante ciò i vichinghi si ripresentarono l’anno seguente riuscendo a disperdere una flotta inglese inviata contro di loro.

Nel 993-994 Olaf Tryggvason I, re della Norvegia, attaccò il porto di Londra, anch’egli fu pagato con una somma di 16.000 sterline.

Olaf I ritornò in Scandinavia, forse già accompagnato da Swyen I re di Danimarca. Furono proprio i danesi a dimostrare la minaccia maggiore nel decennio successivo.
