SIMBOLOGIA
Nell’antichità l’ombelico rappresentava il principio della creazione.
Il più famoso era quello del tempio di Apollo a Delfi: una roccia scolpita a forma di arnia considerata il simbolo del centro del mondo. Il punto in cui il mondo sotterraneo e quello superiore si incontravano.
Probabilmente in origine era sacro alla dea della terra, Gea e solo più tardi ad Apollo; è possibile che un oggetto simile sia esistito anche nel santuario misterico di Eleusi, sacro alla dea Demetra.
Una pietra dell’ombelico del mondo si trovava a Gordio, capitale della Frigia e a Baghdad. A Roma la troviamo nel Foro.
Una roccia del tempio di Gerusalemme era considerata luogo della creazione del mondo e centro della circonferenza terrestre.
Il suo nome, Shetija, risaliva all’ebraico “shata” (fondare), oltre ad essere considerata la base della creazione del mondo era la chiusura che arginava l’acqua sotterranea del Tehom.
Secondo la tradizione rimuovendo la pietra le acque sarebbero straripate; attraverso l’apertura che essa otturava, sita nei locali delle fondamenta del tempio sotto l’altare dei sacrifici, le acque del diluvio sarebbero scese negli abissi.
Anche la stella polare spesso era considerata come ombelico del mondo. La sua immagine speculare sulla Terra era rappresentata dal monte Meru in India.
In generale l’ombelico simboleggia la chiusura in pietra di un canale che collega i livelli del mondo e riunisce in tal modo elementi dello Sciamanesimo, del culto delle pietre e della fede in Madre Terra
