Quando Ciro il Grande, re dei Persiani, distrusse il secondo Impero Babilonese, gli Ebrei ritornarono in patria e ricostruirono Gerusalemme.

Più tardi, furono conquistati dal Greci e poi dai Romani i quali nel 70 d.C. distrussero nuovamente Gerusalemme.
