GUERRE PUNICHE
Roma, da piccolo villaggio di importanza locale, aveva cominciato la sua espansione che l’avrebbe portata a dominare la maggior parte delle terre a quel tempo conosciute.
Nel 280 a.C. era ormai padrona della penisola italica: dalla Romagna fino alla Puglia e alla Calabria. Aveva sconfitto le più forti popolazioni autoctone come gli Etruschi, i Volsci e i Sabini. Con altri aveva sottoscritto patti di alleanza.
Le legioni romane cominciavano ad incutere rispetto e timore nei nemici.
Su terra sembrava non avere rivali, ma sul mare ancora non esisteva. Per i commerci si affidava a navi etrusche o greche, ma non aveva mai sentito la necessità di avere una propria flotta. Mancava delle conoscenze tecniche per costruire una nave militare, per non parlare poi dell’esperienza necessaria per combattere una battaglia in mare. Come vedremo gli eventi la costringeranno a lottare anche per mare con risultati che, tutto sommato, si possono dire molto lusinghieri.
L’altra grande potenza che dominava l’area del Mediterraneo era Cartagine.
Ex colonia fenicia, posta sulla costa africana, vicino a Tunisi fu fondata nel’814 a.C. Nel periodo dell’inizio della guerra con Roma, controllava buona parte del Mediterraneo occidentale e possedeva un potente esercito formato per lo più da truppe mercenarie. Nel 278 a.C. Cartagine sottoscrisse un patto di non aggressione con Roma, per fronteggiare un nemico comune: il re dell’Epiro Pirro, chiamato in Italia dalle colonie greche dell’Italia meridionale in lotta con Roma.
Pirro era oltretutto imparentato con i governanti di Siracusa che era l’unica città della Sicilia rimasta a contrastare il dominio cartaginese sull’isola.
Nel momento in cui era quasi arrivato ad eliminare la presenza di Cartagine dalla Sicilia dovette rientrare nella penisola italica e i punici ne approfittarono per rientrare nelle posizioni che avevano originariamente.
Sventata la minaccia greca di Pirro, rimanevano solo Roma e Cartagine a contendersi il dominio sul Mediterraneo centrale e sulla Sicilia che diventerà terreno di scontro. La Sicilia era di grande importanza strategica dato che permetteva di controllare agevolmente la porzione centrale del Mare Nostrum.
Siracusa, guidata dal tiranno Gerone II, era in guerra con i Mamertini, la popolazione di Messina, che sconfitti dai siracusani, si ritrovarono assediati e con poca possibilità di sopravvivere.
I Mamertini chiesero allora aiuto alle due potenze del tempo: Roma e Cartagine.
Questi ultimi intervennero nel conflitto a fianco di Siracusa e, in breve tempo, conquistarono Messina. Roma, preoccupata per la presenza di Cartagine in una zona così vicina alla penisola italica e in grado di controllare l’importante stretto, decise di offrire il proprio aiuto ai Mamertini: era il 264 a.C. Quando le legioni romane sbarcarono in Sicilia, per la città di Siracusa la situazione divenne difficile. Gerone II venne sconfitto e la città, da nemica, divenne fedele alleata di Roma che, per la prima volta, si insediò nell’isola.
La guerra con Cartagine era solo agli inizi.
Roma, per sperare di vincerla, aveva bisogno di una flotta ed abbiamo già detto quanto fosse scarsa l’esperienza dei Romani nelle battaglie navali. Il loro genio militare li portò allora ad ideare i famosi “corvi” con i quali agganciavano le navi nemiche permettendo ai legionari di attaccare, quasi fossero sulla terraferma. Questi “corvi” permisero a Roma di vincere varie battaglie navali, purtroppo avevano lo svantaggio di rendere poco manovrabili le navi, specialmente nei momenti di pericolo quando l’agilità era necessaria per non affondare.
La prima guerra punica si svolse su due fronti: quello terrestre e quello sulle acque del Mediterraneo
Le operazioni terrestri furono piuttosto limitate e non decisive. Nel 262 a.C. Roma assediò Agrigento e le truppe cartaginesi che ivi erano ospitate. L’assedio durò molti mesi e alla fine ci fu una grande battaglia, vinta dai Romani, che segnò la caduta della città. Sei anni più tardi Marco Attilio Regolo cercò di portare la guerra direttamente in Africa e riuscì sbarcarvi con un numeroso esercito.
La spedizione raccolse vari successi, come la vittoria ad Adys.
Successivamente l’esercito cartaginese, guidato dal mercenario spartano Santippo, si riorganizzò e sconfisse quello romano nella battaglia di Tunisi dove Attilio Regolo fu catturato. La spedizione romana in Africa, quindi, si chiuse con una sconfitta di Roma, ma la guerra doveva decidersi sul mare.
L’uso del “corvo” da parte delle navi romani, fu decisivo e permise di sconfiggere Cartagine nelle battaglie di Milazzo (260 a.C.) e di Ecnomo (256 a. C.), considerata, quest’ultima, una delle più grandi battaglie navali dell’antichità.
Verso la fine della guerra, comparve sulla scena Amilcare Barca, il padre di Annibale che, alla guida di un esercito cartaginese, mise in seria difficoltà i Romani che persero il controllo della maggior parte della Sicilia.
La vittoria navale romana, al largo delle Egadi (241 a.C.), pose fine ad un conflitto, durato ben 23 anni, che vide le due potenze combattersi strenuamente ed arrivare alla fine stremate soprattutto dal punto di vista finanziario.
Come conseguenza della vittoria, Roma acquisì il controllo della Sicilia e subentrò a Cartagine nel dominio sul mare.
Alla città punica furono imposti durissimi obblighi finanziari sotto forma di indennità di guerra che in pratica svuotarono le casse della città che non poteva nemmeno più pagare i suoi mercenari. Per ora la partita si poteva dire chiusa, ma dalle pesanti condizioni imposte ai cartaginesi presto nacquero i germogli che avrebbero portato a quella che viene chiamata nella Storia la seconda guerra punica.
