Prometeo

Prometeo era un Titano figlio di Giapeto e di Climede

Quando i Titani, dopo aver sfidato gli dei furono imprigionati da Zeus nel Tartaro, Prometeo che, come indica il suo nome aveva la virtù di sapere cosa sarebbe accaduto in futuro, suggerì loro d’usare l’astuzia.

I Titani lo ignorarono e quindi passò dalla parte di Zeus. Tuttavia, dopo la battaglia, Prometeo si trovò a scontrarsi con Zeus sul problema del genere umano.

Secondo Esiodo fu lo stesso Prometeo a creare il genere umano dalla creta trovata a Panopea in Beozia, modellando le figure in cui poi Atena soffiava la vita.

Secondo altre fonti Prometeo mostrava sempre i suoi modelli a Zeus per l’approvazione finale, ma non gli mostrò un giovane particolarmente bello chiamato Fenone.

Quando Zeus lo scoprì portò il giovane in cielo e lo trasformò nel pianeta a noi conosciuto come Giove.

Zeus era furente con il genere umano e aveva ormai deciso di distruggerlo e sostituirlo con creature migliori. Cominciò a privarli del fuoco e cercò di affamarli chiedendo che gli fossero sacrificate le migliori parti del loro cibo.

Nella piazza di Mecone durante una disputa a proposito delle parti del toro che dovevano essere sacrificate agli dei e di quelle che gli uomini potevano tenere per sé, Prometeo fu chiamato a fare da arbitro.

Smembrò un toro e ricucì la sua pelle formando due sacche che riempì con le varie parti della bestia. Una sacca conteneva la carne ben nascosta sotto lo stomaco, l’altra invece le ossa nascoste sotto uno spesso strato di grasso.

Portò le sacche a Zeus chiedendogli di scegliere e il dio, tratto in inganno, scelse la sacca con il grasso e le ossa che da quel giorno rimasero le parti dell’animale sacrificata agli dei.

Zeus privò gli uomini del fuoco ma Prometeo si recò di nascosto nell’Olimpo e rubò una brace ardente che nascose nel cavo di una pianta e la donò al genere umano.

Durante la notte Zeus vide la terra coperta da una miriade di luci e irato chiamò i servi Crato e Bia insieme a Efesto e ordinò loro di incatenare Prometeo in cima al monte Caucaso, lontano dal genere umano, quindi inviò un’aquila a divorare il fegato di Prometeo.

Ogni giorno, anno dopo anno il suo tormento non aveva fine perché durante la notte, essendo un Titano e quindi immortale, il fegato continuava a ricrescere.

Quando Prometeo si rifiutò di rivelare un segreto molto importante a Zeus, questi scagliò una folgore che fece cadere il prigioniero insieme alla roccia cui era incatenato nel Tartaro.

Dopo molto tempo, in cambio della preziosa informazione che gli impedì di sposare Teti, perché un figlio nato da quell’unione sarebbe stato più potente del padre e l’avrebbe spodestato, decise di liberarlo.

Allora Eracle, figlio di Zeus, uccise l’avvoltoio e liberò il prigioniero dalle catene. In cambio di questo favore Prometeo gli suggerì la maniera di impossessarsi delle mele nel giardino delle Esperidi.
