Nonostante la battaglia di Qadesh, le ostilità con gli Ittiti continuarono fino alla morte del sovrano Muwatallish.

Il suo successore Hattushilish III e Ramses II firmarono quello che noi conosciamo come il primo trattato internazionale della storia.

Ne sono state ritrovate due versioni. Una in geroglifico, incisa sul muro della Grande Sala Ipostila di Karnak, l’altra scovata tra le rovine della capitale ittita Hattusa, scritta in cuneiforme babilonese su tavolette d’argilla.

A spingere i due regnanti verso l’accordo, che presenta molti elementi di modernità, fu la minaccia degli Assiri, un popolo bellicoso che metteva a repentaglio l’integrità dei due stati.

Il patto fu firmato intorno al 1269 a.C. a Pi-Ramses, la capitale del regno egizio che lo stesso Ramses aveva fatto costruire. Il trattato prevedeva la non belligeranza tra i due popoli, il reciproco aiuto in caso di attacco nemico, la salvaguardia dei rispettivi diritti al trono nei due stati e l’estradizione di rifugiati politici che cercassero ospitalità nei rispettivi Paesi.
