Manetone fu un grande conoscitore dei geroglifici e delle antiche tradizioni mitologiche e storiche. Secondo alcune fonti ricevette la sua educazione a Mendes o ad Heliopolis.
Manetone scrisse in greco una storia dell’Egitto ,Aegyptiaca, di cui ci sono giunti estratti in opere posteriori di Giuseppe Flavio, Sesto Africano, Eusebio di Cesarea. I testi in greco si resero necessari per farsi comprendere dai conquistatori di Alessandro Magno.
Fu proprio Manetone ad introdurre l’uso di chiamare gli Amenhotep, Amenophis; gli Amenemhet Ammenemes, i Senusret, Sesostri e così via.
Dei suoi Aegyptiaca non ci restano che pochi frammenti, ma è comunque a lui che dobbiamo la suddivisione in dinastie dei faraoni egizi di cui ci resta una lista e il papiro di Torino.
Manetone è stato l’unico a riportare elementi cronologici sulle dinastie preistoriche che gli Eliopolitani avevano diviso in Enneadi.
