Nel 1908 l’Austria trasformò in annessione “l’amministrazione temporanea” della Bosnia e dell’Erzegovina. L’azione dell’Austria ebbe come contraccolpo un aumento di tensione nei rapporti con la Serbia – che aspirava ad annettersi le due regioni, abitate dagli “slavi del sud”- e, conseguentemente, con la Russia, sua protettrice.

Nel 1911 scoppia la I guerra balcanica.

Grecia, Bulgaria, Serbia e Montenegro si coalizzano contro l’Impero turco. Al termine del conflitto la Turchia viene ricacciata agli attuali confini dagli stati balcanici.

Sull’Adriatico nasceva, per volontà soprattutto di Austria e Germania, che intendevano impedire alla Serbia lo sbocco al mare, il nuovo principato di Albania. A conclusione di questa guerra gli stati vincitori si affrontarono in una nuova guerra per la spartizione di alcuni territori, in particolare della Macedonia.

La Serbia rimase ancora una volta esclusa dalla sponda adriatica e alimentò il proprio rancore contro l’Austria, che di tale esclusione era la principale responsabile,

Inoltre manteneva sotto il proprio dominio numerose minoranze di nazionalità slava. L’Austria, da parte sua, avvertiva tutto il pericolo che le poteva derivare dalla Serbia (protetta dalla Russia) più che mai decisa ad annettersi i territori abitati dagli “Slavi del Sud”.

Fu questa aspirazione, che vedeva nell’Austria-Ungheria il nemico peggiore, a muovere Gavrilo Princip, il 28 giugno 1914, ad attentare contro l’arciduca Francesco Ferdinando, erede al trono d’Asburgo.

Francesco Ferdinando era sostenitore del trialismo, cioè l’idea di estendere il dualismo austro-ungarico agli Slavi, magari a danno delle altre nazionalità, come quella italiana e boema, e di rinnovare l’impero asburgico con l’apporto della leale collaborazione slava.

Gavrilo Princip era uno studente, nativo della Bosnia, emigrato poi a Belgrado.

Apparteneva alla società segreta della “Mano Nera”, un gruppo nazionalista serbo composto per lo più da ufficiali dell’esercito. La notizia dell’attentato fu accolta in Serbia con entusiasmo. lo stesso governo serbo era almeno indirettamente responsabile dell’ atto terroristico, in quanto, pur avendone avuto sentore, non aveva preso alcuna misura per prevenirlo.

L’assassinio di Francesco Ferdinando fu la scintilla che fece scoppiare la Prima Guerra mondiale.

L’Austria, la Germania e poi la Turchia scesero in campo contro la Serbia, mentre con quest’ultima si schierarono la Russia, la Francia, l’Inghilterra e poi il Giappone, l’Italia e gli Stati Uniti.

Durante la prima guerra mondiale, gli slavi del sud si trovarono su opposte barricate. Sloveni, croati e serbi, sudditi della duplice monarchia, combatterono sul fronte serbo, galiziano e isontino nell’ esercito austro-ungarico. Serbi e montenegrini, alleati dell’Intesa, cercarono di far fronte, come potevano, al disuguale assalto degli imperi centrali.

Lo scontro con la potente Austria-Ungheria e la sua alleata, la Germania, fu quasi fatale ai due staterelli balcanici.

I serbi, travolti da forze soverchianti, si salvarono per il rotto della cuffia nell’autunno del 1915 con un’epica marcia attraverso i monti, fuggendo sull’isola di Corfù.

Più tardi, con il sostegno dei francesi, aprirono un fronte a Salonicco, per ricominciare nell’ottobre del ’18 una sanguinosa, ma vittoriosa riconquista del loro regno. Il clamore delle armi non ebbe l’effetto di soffocare l’idea jugoslava. Se ne fece portavoce un comitato di esuli croati e sloveni, che agì durante la guerra a Londra, Parigi e Roma per sostenere il diritto degli slavi meridionali, assoggetti agli Asburgo di uscire dal “carcere austro-ungarico” e costituirsi come entità politica autonoma.

Per quanto il governo serbo in esilio puntasse soprattutto sulla liberazione delle proprie terre e guardasse “il comitato jugoslavo ” con notevole sospetto decise, il 20 luglio 1917, di firmare con i suoi rappresentanti un preciso accordo che prevedeva i modi e i tempi della futura unione.

La “dichiarazione di Corfù” diventò così la prima pietra su cui fu costruito, nei mesi successivi, l’edificio jugoslavo”.
