Il 4 dicembre 1872 la Dei Gratia, mentre era in navigazione nell’Atlantico ad est delle Azzorre, s’imbattè nella nave Mary Celeste che, con le vele strappate, andava lentamente alla deriva.

Mary Celeste
La Mary Celeste, un brigantino canadese, fu varato in Nuova Scozia nel 1861 e subito si pensò che fosse preda della sfortuna.

Il primo capitano morì all’inizio del viaggio inaugurale. La Mary Celeste si scontrò con un’altra nave nella Manica e dopo anni di gloria si arenò durante una tempesta nella Baia di Glace. Dopo il recupero fu rivenduta ad una compagnia statunitense che apportò notevoli cambiamenti.

Il 7 novembre 1872 al comando del capitano Benjiamin Briggs, la nave salpò da Staten Island diretta a Genova con un carico di alcool industriale. Oltre al capitano, all’ equipaggio composto da sette uomini, viaggiavano anche la moglie del capitano e la sua figlioletta di appena due anni.

Quando fu avvistata dalla Dei Gratia, la Mary Celeste era grondante d’acqua.

Sulla prua c’erano dei tagli di quasi due metri appena sopra la linea di galleggiamento, solo una delle pompe era in funzione e nella stiva vi era circa un metro d’acqua. La bussola era rotta, la scialuppa di salvataggio, il sestante ed il cronometro marino mancavano, mentre la cambusa e il carico erano intatti. Il giornale di bordo con l’ultima annotazione, risalente a nove giorni prima, indicava che la nave era giunta in vista di Santa Maria delle Azzorre. Il comandante della Dei Gratia ordinò ad alcuni marinai di riportare la Mary Celeste a Gibilterra, dove fu sequestrata dai funzionari inglesi.

Cos’era successo al capitano e all’equipaggio della Mary Celeste?

Un ammutinamento?
Un atto di pirateria?
Un’improvvisa tempesta?

Numerose teorie tentarono di spiegare la sparizione dell’equipaggio, dalle più fantasiose a quelle più concrete.

Secondo lo storico Byers è probabile che il capitano Briggs, che non aveva mai trasportato un carico così pericoloso, avesse ordinato di tenere aperti i portelli della stiva con conseguente fuoriuscita di vapori alcolici. Il capitano temendo un’esplosione avrebbe ordinato all’equipaggio di calare la scialuppa, una rottura della cima potrebbe spiegare la scomparsa della scialuppa stessa e i naufraghi dispersi nell’oceano sarebbero morti di fame e di sete.

Un’altra teoria imputerebbe l’equipaggio che avrebbe cercato di impossessarsi del carico, assassinando il capitano Briggs, per poi rubare la scialuppa.

L’abbordaggio da parte di pirati è reso improbabile dal fatto che il prezioso carico fu ritrovato intatto. Potrebbe essere stata una tromba d’acqua, il che spiegherebbe perché la nave era letteralmente grondante d’acqua.

Una recente indagine dello Smithsonian propone la tesi secondo la quale Briggs si sarebbe ritenuto molto vicino alle Azzorre durante una tempesta e, con una pompa fuori uso, avrebbe abbandonato la nave per raggiungere la terraferma.

Nessuno degli uomini scomparsi del brigantino fu mai ritrovato, né si seppe cosa accade loro.

Nel 1873 furono segnalate due scialuppe di salvataggio nell’entroterra spagnolo, una con una bandiera americana a bordo, l’altra contenente cinque corpi.
