Eléna Petróvna von Hahn, nacque a Dnipro (Ucraina) il 12 agosto 1831 e morì a Londra, l’8 maggio 1891 .

Fu una filosofa, teosofa, saggista, occultista e medium.

Co-fondatrice della Società Teosofica nel 1875, come leader teorica internazionale della teosofia moderna, compilò testi di promozione dell’esoterismo come “Iside svelata” e “La Dottrina Segreta”.

Elena era una bellissima bambina dai capelli scuri e magnetici occhi celesti. Fin da piccola dimostrò un interesse spiccato per il soprannaturale.

Era solita raccontare ai compagni di giochi che durante le passeggiate nei sotterranei della casa di famiglia era accompagnata da invisibili amici che chiamava i suoi “folletti”.

Sovente parlava nel sonno, ed era così abile a raccontare storie da procurare allucinazioni agli altri bambini che la stavano ad ascoltare.

A sedici anni sposò Nikifor Blavatsky, un funzionario governativo che aveva tre volte la sua età. L’unione fu molto breve. Di lì a qualche mese Eléna lasciò Blavatsky e in seguito si sposò altre sei volte, senza mai rinunciare, però, al nome di Madame Blavatsky.

Non ancora ventenne, intraprese una serie di viaggi e di avventure che la tennero impegnata per il resto della vita. Inizialmente si guadagnò da vivere in un circo facendo la cavallerizza, poi insegnando pianoforte a Londra e infine facendo da assistente a una medium.

Dal 1849 intraprese una serie di viaggi in tutto il mondo, visitando il continente europeo, le Americhe e il subcontinente indiano. Nel corso di questo periodo avrebbe avuto modo d’incontrare un gruppo di adepti spirituali denominati i “Maestri dell’antica sapienza” i quali la invitarono nel Tibet, dove lo addestrarono per farle sviluppare i suoi innati poteri psichici.

All’inizio dell’anno 1870 rimase coinvolta nel movimento dello spiritualismo.

Pur difendendo l’essenza genuina dei fenomeni, argomentò contro l’idea che le entità contattate fossero spiriti dei defunti (ciò che invece asserirà sempre lo spiritismo).

Dovunque andasse, la gente era incantata dalla sua personalità carismatica.

Fu in quel periodo che Eléna incontrò a New York uno studioso di parapsicologia, Henry Steel Olcott. Con lui fondò un’organizzazione che chiamò Società Teosofica, associandola strettamente con le dottrine esoteriche dell’Ermetismo e del Neoplatonismo.

Il fine di tale società era di studiare i misteri antichi, come i segreti delle piramidi e la natura delle persone vissute nel passato.

Guida spirituale di un movimento in espansione Madame Blavatsky creò per la Società Teosofica una bibbia gigantesca di dieci volumi.

Ognuno di circa 1.500 pagine, uno dei quali era la “Dottrina segreta”, un caposaldo della letteratura occultistica, terminato nel 1888.

Helena Blavatsky scrisse anche “Le Stanze” dal Libro di Dzyan che costituiscono l’argomento principale del primo e secondo volume de “La dottrina segreta”. L’ opera di teosofia in due volumi fu pubblicata nel 1888.

La parte I del primo volume, intitolata “Cosmogenesi”, contiene sette stanze in versi ermetici e simbolici composte dalla Blavatsky, per ognuna delle quali l’autrice dedica, in seguito, un capitolo di commento in cui spiega i suoi stessi versi. Il secondo volume intitolato “Antropogenesi” ne contiene altre dodici, sempre seguite da un commento e da un’interpretazione.

“Le Stanze” sarebbero state composte dalla Blavatsky interpretando il linguaggio iconografico di un presunto manoscritto tibetano molto antico, il Libro di Dzyan che sarebbe servito come base sapienziale per “La dottrina segreta”. La Blavatsky descrive il manoscritto, di cui avrebbe avuto visione diretta, come un testo antico di migliaia di anni conservato in un luogo segreto del Tibet.

Scritto “su foglie di palma, rese inalterabili al fuoco, all’acqua e all’aria mediante qualche processo specifico ignoto”, il libro tratterebbe della cosmogenesi e dell’evoluzione dell’uomo fino alla distruzione di Atlantide.

Helena Blavatsky, elaborò una filosofia universale, di cui era parte integrante il continente di Lemuria.

Secondo Madame Blavatsky e i suoi seguaci, i Lemuri erano la terza di sette razze originarie del genere umano. Il loro continente occupava quasi tutto l’emisfero meridionale. In origine erano un popolo ermafrodito che comunicava soltanto grazie a facoltà mentali conferite da un terzo occhio.

La quarta razza erano gli Atlantidi.

Evolutisi dai Lemuri, quando Lemuria s’inabissò nel mare milioni di anni fa, abitavano uno sperone di Lemuria nell’Atlantico settentrionale, che in seguito andò a fondo, scomparendo definitivamente circa 9.000 anni fa.

Secondo Madame Blavatsky alcuni profughi, sfuggiti al disastro, trovarono riparo in Asia centrale. Da lì avevano poi preso origine le moderne popolazioni indù ed europee.
